Has anyone used a wireless rear camera on their caravan?

I would like to use a wireless to make things a lot easier but would like to hear first hand experiences first.

thanks

I haven't but I too am keen to learn more on this subject. What would be really nice is one I could move from back of camper to back of Defender as required. That gadget they had on Top Gear Australia with the Rangie would fit the bill, but I think the price might kill it.

I've also found this which looks interesting: Swift Hitch (http://www.rearviewsystems.com/wireless.html)

DONT DO IT!
Mine ($400) works fine in the car as a reversing camera, but it's very intermittent when in the van. And I've tried everything to improve reception. It's a signal to noise ratio thing. Works fine when stationary, even with the engine running, but not underway. I suspect it's EMI from the plug leads under load, so if you have a diesel you might be better off. I've even build my own waveguide antenna which improved things slightly - but it's still no good.

Get a wired one. Or if you still want one - you can have mine cheap!

Gday, i have a wired one as i was advised that a wireless one didnt have a strong enough signal for my setup, the van is 8mts from coupling to rear bumper and a lot of the cameras i looked at only had 6mt signal ????. The wired one works great, i got it on eBay for next to nix

Mine from Jaycar is great. Not on a van but I walked to the other end of my house (inside) and still had a clear signal to the car. The only annoying part is you pick up a lot of security cameras as you drive.lol

Is this what you have?
Jaycar - 2.4GHz Wireless Reversing Camera (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QC3721&CATID=24&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form=CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUBCATID=915)
If so how does it install? Power requirements, etc.

That's the one. I can't recall what the actual instructions said but I tapped in to the ciggie lighter power for the screen and I just went in to the revese lights for the camera. You can do it in to any power source though. I am trying to recall what the camera needed as I have a funny feeling it was only 9volts but it is working fine just on the reverse lights and has lasted about 9 months now. The onl thing is, is that it doens't turn on automatically so you have to press the button on unless you put it on a permanent power source which is easy enough but I don't use it enough to have ever worried.

You can have up to 4 cameras. The system cost about $165 I think. But I have a jay car discount card.

If that desn't answer your qn let me know. I think I went a bit off track.

No, not off track at all, just what I needed to know. Thanks!

Thanks all. I have heard that many of the wireless ones do not have the range for a van, which is why I was asking.

I will look at the Jaycar one.

I already have a 12v computer in the car hooked up to a 7" touchscreen. this runs my sat nav and Ozi explorer, so I am hoping I can hook a camera into this.

Hello All,

This is a Old Thread but has the same question I wish to ask.

I am interested in a Wireless Camera from the caravan to the cabin.
Has there been any improvement on these since this Thread Started in 2008?
Also interested if a Mobile Device like a iPad may be used for the Monitor.

I have a wired setup to the rear of the car and a sender/receiver in the vehicle with a wired camera to the back of the van ( If that makes any sense?).

The setup is not the best and the picture from the wireless sender/receiver and the picture can at times break up and be less than perfect. I have not really tried to trouble shoot it yet and may yet go back to running another wire from the rear of the vehicle to the front that will accommodate the wired setup on the van.

It was a bit of an experiment and if you get the sender/receiver on ebay it's not a big expense - buy it locally and you'll pay more.

I'm not sure things are better with the cheap stuff now. I have one in the 101 and while it works, the quality of the picture is not great. It certainly wouldn't have the distance to be used on a van - it barely makes it from where it is a few metres away.
I'm sure a better quality unit would work better, but if I do it all again or get one for the van, I'll be hard wiring it.

Not sure about displaying it on the ipad - I have been thinking about this myself.

Ok, so a Wifi camera to ipad is possible, but not straightforward in a car. You can use a wifi IP camera, but then you need it connected to a router - like your wifi router in your home. If you have a smartphone you can use the hotspot on that, but its hardly a solution that will work by bunging the vehicle in reverse.

It would be fairy simple to set it up so it worked easily in your driveway while connected to your home network, but once ou drove off...

Stay tuned, I have an IP camera at work I use for security on big sites - I'll have a play with it.
