View Full Version : Grease flinging CVs

One of the outcomes from fitting my 50mm lift kit has been my previously oil and grease tight Freebie has developed GFCV syndrome.

Just a little from the LH front CV, with a light spray onto the exhaust for that lovely burning grease smell.
A fair amount from the RH front CV splattering most things in sight.

At first I though I had holed the boots as a result of my enthusiastic effort to shove everything back together, but no they are in fine shape.
I tightened up the clamps on the boots as much as is possible and the flinging has reduced, maybe even gone on the LH side, but the RH side is still at it, leaving a light spray of the fresh grease I shoved into the CV just this morning.

Icky stuff that grease, I don't like it :(

Any clues?

Out of interest, where is it leaking from?

Mine throws a little grease/oil from where the CV fits into the side of the GB/IRD but nowhere else. Around the boots is clean. Its only where the metal inner meets the GB casing.

cheers!

This is definitely from under the boots; I cleaned everything off to ensure I could see the source not just the result. I did think about sealing off the boots with a light coat of a semi rigid liquid gasket, but that shouldn't really be necessary.

I have a distinct intolerance for leaking automotive bits, not even cured by my Alfa....

Does it look like the clamps just need replaced? Because the ones holding the boots are not adjustable.

CheerS!

Actually the clamps are adjustable if you have a suitable tool to apply tension.
It is described in the service procedures on the RAVE CD and as it happens I have a tool that does the job.

I found that if you grabbed hold of the boot you could get a small amount of movement of the boot over the CV, so I removed the RH side clamp, shoved a little more lubricant in and clamped it back up a little tighter.
LH I just tightened.

Appears I have reduced the mess, and from the RH side it is at least clean grease :)
