View Full Version : One great reason to drive a diesel powered vehicle

Went to get fuel today because it was cheap....well, a hell of a lot cheaper than it has been of late.
Being "tight **** Tuesday", the petrol station was PACKED. Every pump had a queue at least 6 cars deep...except the diesel pump:D
I drove straight in, filled 'er up (with a smug expression on my face), walked in and paid. This took less than 5 minutes. Meanwhile, the queues had not moved an inch.
Got back to the Disco and an old feller was filling up his ute with diesel. A knowing look passed between us.:)

Actually I was amazed at how empty the servos were this afternoon and this morning.
I filled up with ULP. About the second time since fitting LPG last year.
The forecourts were no busier than any normal day. I drove straight in and straight out after paying 122.9c/L.
Ordinarily they would be chockers and with ULP cars blocking the diesel and LPG pumps.

True, in fact I was having this very discussion only last week with a very posh, kinda hot lady in a diesel Mercedes. She was telling me that she always wears glove to fill up, because "truck drivers and other tradesman always leave the pump dirty":D:D.
But I usually find the only diesel pump is blocked by everyone else.

Must be where I live, 3 diesel pumps, 2 ULP and one PULP pump. Usually can't get to the diesel because either (a) they are all in use or (b) someone with a humugous boat is filling it with a few hundred litres of ULP and blocking all the pumps.
What's the price of diesel? It's still a $2.039/L here

The most annoying time that happened to me (LPG) was when I waited and waited for the person at the pump to return to their car only to find they had just parked there to go to the shop!
Didn't even have an LPG car!
I think the best reason to drive a diesel vehicle is because you can go 800kms on a standard tank so even if the pump is blocked it isn't so bad as you can't remember the last time you needed to fill anyway :D

Also helps when the other nearest fuel outlet is almost 800km away:p

Diesel in Brisbane is around $1.43 I saw unleaded for $1.19 today. Hopefully diesel prices start dropping like ULP.

Was the 119.9c/L E10?
If it was then that is what it was near me too.
Just imagine how low it would be if our $ didn't just nosedive!

Soon after I bought my Peugeot 504 diesel in the early 80's there were petrol shortages in Adelaide due to a strike or non-arrival of tankers or whatever. Diesel was not affected. Petrol restrictions increased from odds/evens to a permit system and the streets were almost deserted.
I remember driving past the queue for permits that snaked along the footpath outside the Transport Dept. building and receiving a few hard looks (I resisted the temptation to circle the block and drive past again - and again). A driver pulled in behind me at a "closed to petrol" service station while I was filling up and, after fingers pointed in my direction accompanied by some direct questions, was chased off by the staff.
In those days diesel cars were rare and, after lifting the diesel hose, I would often get a call over the service station PA "does pump x REALLY want diesel?". Once I even had someone run out of the office in a panic to "save" me from a refuelling disaster!

This used to happen quite often at my servo as the deisel pump was on it's own beside the shop so rice bubbles were always parked infront of it. One day such a vehicle blocked the pump with a girl behind the wheel so I fronted her in the 110 and bipped the horn but she made some rude gesture and pointed into the shop. So I reversed a reasonable distance, engaged low low, and let the clutch out then blew the horn with intent as I got out of the moving vehicle and stood there as it rolled towards her rice bubble. The pump area was vacated.

I always wear gloves too when filling up. There's a pair of riggers gloves wedged beside the seat.
Wonder if that makes me hot and posh .... :lol2:

The main Shell in Orange actually supply plastic gloves at the diesel bowser.

Yep, it is great when they have a stand alone bowser for diesel, love some of the dirty looks you get :D, but most of the time there is not, so you have to wait you're turn
woo hoo, 500th post too!

We bought our Peugeot 405 diesel in 1994 I think it was and the same thing used to happen all the time. Even when other car manufactures started making diesel cars more mainstream it still happens. I actually had an attendant come out to me the other day to make sure I wanted diesel. It is a good thing though and shows that people are looking out for you.

I don't ...maybe I'll get some hideous, tradesman-related skin disease. :D

The $1.19 was for E10. I filled up with Diesel today for $1.40 less 4c voucher. Getting better every week. About bl**dy time!!! :)

Ditto...er, maybe not the hot and posh bit...
The pumps do always seem to be covered in it and I was sure I read somewhere about some of the (not very nice) esters in diesel being able to pass readily through the skin. Mind you with the crap that goes into ULP to make it work, like toluene, you could probably swim in diesel.:eek:

In the late sixties I was had a diesel 2a, and in those days anything that used diesel except heavy trucks was a lot rarer than diesel cars in the 1990's. I was living in Brisbane, and apart from a few truck stops round the edges of the city, there were probably only three or four service stations in the whole of Brisbane with diesel. So you had to plan your fuelling well ahead. Not as bad by then I don't think as when I first moved to Brisbane - in those days it was illegal to sell petrol in the metropolitan area from lunchtime Saturday to Monday morning except for a few rostered servos.
Also, there was only one all night service station between Brisbane and Sydney, at Wallangara.
