There we were coming home from a wonderful trip on the Caledonia River (Vic), scrambling up the Dingo Track (with camper in tow), got the very last switchback on the way out and BANG, the rear diff self destructed:(

There we were in the middle of the track, fortunately early morning, me underneath removing the rear tailshaft, missus wardy doing the passing of tools, and thinking Hell, i hope we can get the rest of the way up in front wheel drive:eek:.

Well, we couldn't. Fortunatly we came across (or actually they arrived) a great group with a couple of prado's, a 60 and a new jeep. They kindly towed me up, returned back to the camper and pulled it up (albeit with more difficulty than we were having on the previous/more difficult stage :D)

It's nice to know that the spirit of the bush is still alive and well!

Anyway, I'm glad I had a CDL fitted, we had a nice drive home in front wheel drive....now I have to find a diff...... anyone got one?

Sorry to hear of your trouble Wardy, it is always good to see people helping others out in the bush. Time for you to upgrade to a locker in the rear i think:D
I have one out in the driveway you could buy..............it comes with a whole discovery though:p

Thanks Wildone..... I'm thinking very seriously re the locker. Might as well get it in there while its all in bits. Why would you be wanting to sell a D2 as good as yours....esp leaving the beer fridge in LOL.

Can anyone tell me if the D1 centre offered by Dirtydawg will fit please.

is your diff a 24 spline?

Not sure, will have a look when I get home in about an hour

Yes it will fit. It is slightly different in the carrier but it will swap over as long as the d1 version is 24 spline

I just bought myself a Ranger XLT Crew Cab 4x4 with a full compliment of bits, Colour coded canopy, colour coded bullbar, snorkel, driving lights.....Not as capable as my Disco but far more suited for work and will make an excellent tourer. Has more power out of the box than my chipped Disco.
Will be VERY sad to see the Disco go but will get another Landy down the line for some offroad fun:D Perhaps a 90??;)

Geez,
Dingo Hill track is - in my book- not the place to take a camper trailer..
I've nearly been trapped down there after rain, the track turns horrible. My father in law had an angina attack with me coming out of there once.
If you are going to go along similar tracks, better get an extra spare diff.
Campers are great to have but, if you put in a difflock and go down there again with it, be prepared to have a spiral driveshaft or busted axle.
Someone's gotta be the voice of reason.

Thanks fo the kind advice. Hindsight is a simply wonderful thing. It was not my intention to use Dingo Track, the unmarked track closures due the flooding and bushfires meant that we either had to go that way, or return the entire length of Butchers, not really that much of a choice. Oh, and before I get the "You should have checked DSE", I just didn't ok.

Nice response Wardy...and good on ya for giving it a go! Thats one way to be forced to get a diff lock! BTW - can I borrow your camper for ther weekend?!

Dunno about hindsight, If I was coming out either Butcher County or Dingo Hill from the Caledonian and saw you going in with a camper trailer I would have been racked with the guilts for not giving you the heads up, as you were alone. Then again, if there were campers in there to help I probably would have kept driving.
I think the advertising & tough build of the "offroad" campers give the impression that they can go anywhere.
They probably can- behind a Unimog.

Why do some people seek to hijack a thread for their own pontifications?
Ok Deejay....how many vehicles did we pass going in? NONE.
I'm quite sure that had we seen anyone coming out of the Butchers Link Track, they WOULD have said something. As previously stated, the 4wd/bush spirit of assistance and advice still remains.
As to whether or not the camper can take it...... ours is fine, it was the 200km+ diff that broke, NOT the O'BRIENS CAMPER.
Now, if you've NEVER made an error of judgement in your life, keep up the criticism. If you have, this stupid hijack will cease.
Happy to talk with people who might be able to help with a diff though:).

I havent heard of it before but how many people out there have broken a diff or axle in a D2 - and what conditions/size tyres etc.

I dont have CDL...I just did a great Fraser trip with traction control only, but in time CDL might have to sneak back in (albeit expensive because I need output housing etc) just for this sort of reason.

Sorry to hear about the problem, but glad it turned out well...pity it was Toyos towing you out, because they will enlarge on the story big time

Cheers

Nope Tojo's don't win here! The Jeep towed me up, the Tojo pulled the trailer with some difficulty. In the end, it was just the people in the bush that made it all turn out ok.
PM me if you want some costings on the complete CDL, if I hadn't fitted it, we'd still be there....no font wheel drive either.

Sorry you see it as criticism, and a hijack, I think what I said was on topic. My comment about the campervan was regarding the manufacturers marketing tactics.
Anyway, enough pontificating

I spoke to a backyarder here who dismantles series 1 Disco's. He has Series 1 diffs with 24 spline that he says fit up to 02 for $150.00. He's in Seaford.
But not 4.11.( I assume 3.54 is standard). You might need to go to Jacmac for the c/w & pinion, or wherever you sourced them yourself.
Steve - number is 0412 075002

A MASSIVE thanks from wardy to the AULRO community. I never cease to be amazed at the advice and practical help given by members. The loceker is going in to the Disco this week and maybe....just maybe.... one of Toomies upsized intercoolers:twisted:.
I think someone on here actually says that the spending never ends in his signature..... he's right;)

Yep, I totally killed my diff centre whilst on a trip. it broke at 113,000 km, newer towed a caravan, oils changed every 50k. I limped back to civilisation only because a CDL was fitted. Diff lapping repairer advised this was caused by excessive wheel spin on any one side of the diff, it can happen to any standard diff. Anyway, fitted a no-spin Detroit locker and it's a far more capable vehicle now. Worth the money!

Yep. 285/75-16, I was driving on a mission, on shale, on a steep hill up a step (almost) without having aired down. :(

Fortunately it's just the diff center that goes kaboom and not the CW&P gears like the 120 Series Prado.

My diff center went gradually due to excessive wheel spinning. It didn't go bang but the diff oil started to show signs of metal shavings. One day, whilst driving on a bitumen, I had to do a U turn, and there was a loud bang. But the Disco kept going - it was the planetary gears jumping a cog.

After a number of such cog jumping incidences, I got the diffs pulled before I got stranded. The spider gears were all very average looking. I must have been lucky that I could even still drive the vehicle without a pin flying out and punching a hole through the diff housing, which can and does happen.

All is good (and stronger) now with an ARB diff lock.
I ended up replacing the half shafts as well for added "safety margin"

Well, I got the old girl back. Unfortunately the crown gear and pinion were shot to bits too, mainly because I had to drive so far to get home I think. That meant that the $$ didn't stretch to the locker right now. Second hand diff (only got 5,000km on it) all fitted for $900. The locker will still go in, just be in Feb/Mar 09 before our big NT trip:D

Once again, thanks everyone.

BTW, does anyone need a diff centre, only 500km old. $100 its yours (thats what I paid for it).
