Fiat make absolutely first class ag. tractors, earthmoving equipment(Fiat-Allis), diesel engines. Pity about the cars which are only marginally better than a Renault, and of their trucks, well, the old adage, if you can't say anything good, say nothing.

I am surprised to find I am the first to observe that you are looking at a SANTANA rebadged as a Iveco.
Of course it looks like a Defender killer. It is a Series 111.
And you guys are supposed to be experts.

Fiat started making the Campagnolo back in the early fifties.

And I love my Fiat Tractor. Made around 1970, 3.1 litre direct injection, 95mm bore x 110mm stroke, it's a ripper.
I've worked on later model Fiat-Agri's and New Holland's and the same engine as my old girl in six cylinder configuration is used, it just has Iveco stamped on the block these days.
Obviously the really new stuff is common rail, electronic injected.

This was Fiat's answer to the Jeep. Designed by Dante Giacosa, the modest but brilliant engineer responsible for such classics as the Topolino, all of Fiat's rear-engined baby cars of the 50s and 60s, and, later, the 128 and 127. He schemed the Campagnola to Italian military specifications around existing Fiat 1100 and 1900 components, but with a splitter gearbox and transfer box to the front wheels. Because of the political situation in Italy at the time, it was felt that the car should be referred to as an agricultural vehicle, and in the end it was built for both civilian and military use. Production continued well into the '70s, when it was replaced by a new model based on the Fiat 132 chassis, but although it was long-lived and successful it was virtually unheard of outside Italy. Incidentally, Campagnolo meant 'country girl'.

Yes they would be, all round. I thought they'd be a hit with the Defender crowd. You know get rid of these modern coils and all, back to basics. When you're out bush you can now fix the suspension with some horse cart that was dumped 100 years ago on the side of the road.

Just noticed your post. The lada is no pig as constant 4X4 etc. Just don't do a hand brakie or stall turn like I tried to and found out the hard way:eek:. I must say for a soviet pos I was inpresed:cool:

I believe the Iveco is released in NZ, is it coming in to Australia?

I just realised a Fiat motor in a Land Rover... hmmmm... like the Lamborgini LM002:eek:

The Fiat-tata tie is a serious one and the two companies are intending to establish real synergies. Think win-win. Lets keep a good eye on these developments.
That said, and not too disparage Fiat's excellent (world leading?) diesel engines, the beancounters at Fiat and Tata have already determined that the ultimate goal of the partnership is to combine the tried and true Landrover chassis and aluminium body with the engines of Fiat subsidiary Ferrari.
Solihul engineers have already conducted 2 years of testing in Arctic and Desert environments that have proven that as the Ferrari engines are just as tempermental, unreliable, and as expensive to maintain as traditional Landrover donks, and that they would make ideal powerplants for the Landrover only if they can overcome the technical difficulties of developing a direct injection twin turbo quad-cam 60 valve V-12 that is not encumbered by the inherent disadvantage of a dry sump racing engine; that is no dripping oil on the driveway.

Italians make the best engines, rest of the car may fall apart but the engines never say die. My Lancia 575k before original head gasket went.
I think it would be a good thing. Plus FIAT is a huge company with massive resoursces and some of the best engineering expertise in the world to call on in it's group.
