A mate of mine sold his Tdi Defender and bought a stock as TD42 GU
He reckons its a gutless heap of poo compared to the 2.5 Tdi:eek:
He reckons the Tdi would run rings around the big pile of jap crap:p
No he is not impressed with performance and ride , but he loves the elbow and leg room in the cab

DO
Many's the time that pick up my gf and her 2 girls plus bits and pieces and say "I should have bought the Patrol" - It was a very nicely kept GU TD42T "Walkabout", but was about 8 grand more than I wanted to spend...but, oh, the room!

I know my Tdi D1 is faster taking off than the work 4.2 turbo intercooled patrol ute. I was only taking off with about half throttle into a 100 zone and the patrol was flat chat and i was pulling away. The 3 inch exhaust changes them a lot and makes them a closer match to the D1.

IF I wanted a bigger vehicle, then a TD42T 04 or so age Patrol would be in the driveway.

BUT, they are characterless and I would die of boredom driving it.

SO, I'm keeping the Rangie/s and watching the patrols rust away around me..and the 3.0l ones melt pistons...:p

Still, shorty only paid $5k for his, a good buy it was too for an accessorised 4.2diesel LWB.

If you HAVE to get one, get a 4.2 diesel one. You can't break them with a big stick, as long as you keep the bodies from falling apart:(

But all it needs is the fuel screw turned and it'll be chomping up tdi's for breakfast:twisted:

i was in a 4.2 D patrol GQ on the W/end. There were 2 non turbos. They were gutless but ok in low range. I know this discussion in on GU's and I dont know exactly how much larger the GU is over the GQ but it must be massive. The GQ' (much to my surprise) was tiny in the back with the feeling you are sitting on the floor and the front not a lot better. Compare that to my RRC and you get so much front space I can barely reach the steering wheel (I am fairly tall and have not owned such a spacious car before) when the seat is back, and in the rear a proper upright seat with leg space. Anyway, the GQ's did feel unbreakable which is nice but if you own one you loose on space, power, economy.

Ooohh yeah. My word they are strong with more fuel:eek:

And you STILL can't hurt the drivetrain.:(

But as I said, I find them mind numbingly boring to drive, and far too big for tight on and offroad work, especially towing a campertrailer. But each to their own.:)
