I have broken the parking brake cable on the 101.
I will ring Britsh 4WD tomorrow and try and find one.
I dont like my chances of getting one.
I will most likely get one made locally and get a winch gear shift cable done while I am at it.
Anyone else need cables whisle I am getting them made?

Hi Ron
I've seen the handbrake cable replaced with a length of threaded rod and a couple of clevis forks in the past, much cheaper.
cheers

Thanks dave.
I did think of that, but havent had time to check it out.
I think the rod may have to have a bit of a dogs leg in it.
I am going camping in the defender this weekend and will not get around to the 101 for a while.
It is nice to know some one has already done it.
I still got to get cables done anyhow as my winch cable is jamming up and I was going to get a spare HI/LO.../.overdrive cable done too.
They cost $137 dollars from con wire in Sydney the last time I done it.

Got the old parking brake cable out of the 101 today.
Yes a rod can be used to replace the cable, but you will lose alot of leverage.
The cable was used for a reason and that reason is the cable changes the directioin of travel 70 degrees and therefore if a push/pull rod is used the parking brake will not be anywhere as effective.
One of the good points of the 101 is the parking brake as standard.
The things I will do is put grease nipples on the standard push/pull rod bellcranks as any binding of the linkage greatly helps the cable to fail.

New cables fitted and what a difference.
The parking brake is applied with a light pressure of two fingers under the handle and the drive train is locked.
My overdrive gearshift is improved greatly by having a cable of exactly of the right lenght and a better cable run.
Transfercase is the same as before as I had a new cable before, but there was a great improvement with the new cable to the original one.
Before high/low changes on the move were difficult and now a piece of cake.
The winch is now working again thanks to the new cable, but due to the lenght and the need to work at a slightly non standard angle because of the overdrive it is no where as light as the others.:)
