Series 1 Capstan Winch

The series 111 I used to own had a capstan winch which was driven by a basic dog clutch mechanism from the harmonic balancer on the engine - it was a far from satisfactory arrangement as it would often disengage and chew out the drive pins.

I notice that many series 1s also have capstan winches fitted and I might want to get on in due course for my series 1.

Can anyone tell me if the drive for the winch on a series 1 is the same as my series III or by a difference means.

The drive was basically the same, although the actual dog clutch mechanism was different (although it is possible that your S3 may have had an early winch or mechanism - the bits are basically interchangeable allowing for differences in the engine itself). The Series 1 dog clutch had three short pegs fitting into three axial holes, both on discs about 2" diameter. Operation was by sliding a knob next to the winch rather than a lever as used on the later dog clutch.

G'day All, JDNSW has said most of it, the only variance I would suggest is that the mounts to support the cradle etc on the engine will differ for a Series 1 as a against the later model engines.
I was talking to a lady a few weeks ago who had a new capstan winch still in it's crate, but that was years ago and I doubt now whether she would still have it, if I see her again I will enquire about it, cheers Dennis:angel:

The dog clutch arrangement for the Farey/Mayflower (MAP) winches fitted to the SIII is a very different animal to the mechanism as fitted to the Aeroparts capstan winches fitted to Series 1 and series 2/2a. What ever clutch system was fitted, the setup and alignment was of vital importance and incorrect alignment can make it impossible to disengage.

Making something work is always possible.

The easiest way to start would be to try and find the alloy bearing block and clutch mechanism off a series 2a Land Rover. Then you need to find the mounting brackets for your engine.

I do know that Bobslandies had a s2/2a clutch mechanism and possibly as many as three.
