Hello Folks,

I have a strange new Defender noise, only occurs occasionally, when the hand brake is released! BOIIIING! (a spring being twanged kind of sound). It doesn't do it all the time - in fact, it's only happened twice.

I told the dealer - they know the noise I mean, but reckon it's just the springs and unless they can replicate the noise in the workshop there is nothing they need to do.

Anyone else had this happen? Anyone know exactly what causes it?

I hear that noise (from the dealers) when they don't know what it is or what to do. Of course they can't trust you, the driver, to provide a good enough description of where to start investigating.

Good luck with it.

I would guess that the expander is sticking, probably because it is full of mud or dust, or has got rusty. This will be because the boot on it (trying to remember whether there is a boot on the Defender, or the cable doesn't have one) is damaged, or water and dust/mud has got in due to deep wading.

Needs to be taken apart and lubricated before it devides to stick on permanently. This is a relatively simple job, and few if any parts are likely to be needed.

After another drive today, the boing spring noise happened again - I had pulled up in our driveway (turning through 90 degrees) and got out to open the gate. Once I got back into the vehicle - BOIING!

I hadn't touched the handbrake! So I'm guessing it must be something to do with the suspension.

It is also interesting to note that it has only ever happened in this same spot - in our driveway. The road camber is fairly severe leading me to think it's got something to do with the springs. It sounds like it's coming from the front driver's side.

Hmm.

Maybe you ought to call it Zebedee. ;)

I get the occasional "boing" from my rear springs, have from new, sometimes when articulating, sometimes cornering, especially on dirt. It is quite loud, I assume it is the springs somehow "resettling themselves" into position, new springs didnt change it happening.I think its a Fender thing due to the sound travelling up through the cargo area, frightens the crap outa you the first time. Its been happening for over 5 years and I've had no issues.

I have no experience with the newer Landies, so please excuse my ignorance, but do they have their handbrakes on the back wheels now? If so, it could also explain it happening when you released the handbrake - a sticky handbrake cable. It could also be a sticking brake piston (but it may not be bad enough to jam them on) or an odd worn-in notch somewhere. I'm still thinking brakes because we use them a lot when arriving or leaving home.

The only other thing I could suggest is if you have an LPG tank. They seem (to me at least) to make some odd noises at times. Or maybe you could have some roaming item in the car that moves just right. I've had a rattle which I thought was one of my gearsticks. It turned out to be my Maglite on the dash.

Good luck!

Thanks for trying to help - but I've now discovered that the handbrake has nothing to do with it - I'm pretty sure it is the Suspension. Crump has had the same issue (see above) - I think the worst thing is it scared the crap out of me when it happened! :D

It doesn't happen driving along - just when I get back into the vehicle after turning into my driveway which is quite cambered.

PS - The handbrake works on the transmission - not on the disc brakes. I've got no LPG tank - it's a diesel and the noise is definitely something from outside the cabin

I'm not saying I know what it is or if its good or bad, just my assumption, I'm blissfully ignorant. On recollection it did it on a rockshelf at Kroombit when Mrs Ho Har was navigating:eek:, and she never said anything,:D so I assumed it was normal for all Defenders. But like you say its a definite"boing' like when you belt a trampoline spring against the frame.Perhaps someone who knows more about suspension and less about trampolines can elaborate???;)

Thanks crump - understood - we both don't know if it's OK! :D Maybe a Mod could change the thread title to "Defender Suspension Boing Noise".

Did you have heavier springs put in the front?

When the parcel with my new front springs arrives (HD OEM's) I'll be upgrading the front end.

Be interesting to see if anything comes of this as I certainly have no BOIING type of noise from the suspension or anything else at present.

Having said that, I have also experienced my handbrake locking on, but you know what it is as you cant move, but it lets go with a "bang"that wakes up Christchurch, not a "boing".

got you covered from both sides....

1. the handbrake... it can still be this, if the slack adjuster (not the cable/linkage adjustment) had not been set correctly and youve taken it up on the cable/linkage adjustment and then given the vehicle a good mud run the shoes and application wedge will be sticking at the "not on but not off" position. a vibration then makes the shoes pull back and providng the return springs arent full of crap they will "broing"

2. the suspension... have a look at the upper spring locating plates you should see on them a "tang" when you unload the suspension on one side occasionally the spring will unsettle and grab on the tang not much just a little and then again when just the right vibration comes along it will let go and the spring sproings. occasionally it happens the other way, as your compressing the spring (parking with it cross axled is a perfect example) and the tang will stop the spring from compressing all the way... shake it and "sproing"....

I get to go do a look see about once a month and twice on every 110 drivers course. theres an FFR I can get to do the suspension one on demand..

the counties did it, the discos do it, the perenties do it and big red does it...

theres solutions for it but I think its character and should be left alone.

on the edit....

forgot, since its a chassis mounted noise it translates to different areas very effectively...

Heh Dan,

I had a similar problem after I hit a 2' deep ditch at about 40kph :o and I managed to dilocate my front drivers side spring :(. It made some funny noises untill I jacked the front corner of the car right up and persuaded the spring back into position. Easy as :D

Have you hit any big holes lately or had some serious cross articulation action  (sounds a bit rude, dosen't it :wasntme:)

The other thing you can do is just wait untill the noise gets a lot louder and people driving past start to point and stare!! Follow their pointing it will be easy to find then :p

Cheers,
