Hi all,
for once i'll start a thread!!

To tell the story, comming home last night from a meeting I encounted a native about 5' high. The meeting was alas short and we did get to say much to each other before we had to part. Now he is sleeping soundly. The photo's say it all :(:(:(

Nasty, and commiserations. Been there and done that. Hit two roos in two cars five days apart. Wrote off the complete front end of a 180B and then took the drivers side front guard out on the Stage 1.

Will be an expensive exercise methinks.

Outch:eek: He must have made contact on the up hop to do that. Ive struck a few big ones here over the years and never had one do that to that style of bar. Hope the chassis is ok.

Know how you feel.... This happened to me back in 2005 while I was down at a property near Ravensthorpe/Hopetoun in WA.
Thing is, I was based in Albany at the time and had just taken off the ****ty ally bar and waiting for the ARB winch bar to be delivered. Had a 4 week planting job in Munglinup to do and the bar hadnt arrived from Perth in time.
this happened about 7AM in the morning on Springvale rd just as we had left the Mungy Caravan park to go to the job.
Got a big Western red on the hop (alpha male) with no chance of stopping in p***ing down rain on a dirt road. He was over 6 ft and hit him doing about 80k's.

Bumper bar didnt suffer anything worse than wearing a bit of fur and roo juice, but everything else on top just folded!!

Insurance paid out $12,000 for the job. New bonnet cost $3000!!!!

I was doing about 90Kms when I hit him. I had just dipped my lights as a truck was around the corner. Skip came out and and landed in front of me just at the same moment as I dipped the lights. You know when you dip the lights, you get a 1 or 2 sec delay before things get real clear and the eyes adjust to lesser light. Well that is when he decided to hop out.
He was not on the hop, just landed there, I took my foot off the accelerator we made eye contact then wham, and I just rolled over the top of him.

He must have done something though, had to get it flatbed-ed to a repairer. Radiator leaking water, so possible damage to Radiator, heat exchanger for air con, inter cooler. Grill RS and surround, oh and bull bar.

He measured about 41/2 to 5' from base of tail to head.

I am quite Okay touch wood (tapping head)

And the city "experts" decry bullbars! Without it the damage would have been a lot worse.

My thought exactly, I wonder how many city experts have had a roo come though their windscreen and then start kicking and thrashing around because it is not quite dead yet? I would hate to imagine what would happen

GF,
Does that bar have crush cans fitted? If so did they compress at all?.
Just wondering how much of a whack is needed to stuff the cans.:p

What are they?

It has nothing on the front that compresses, no air bags or any BS like that. Hope that answers your question?

I thought crush cans were only on bars where the car had SRS airbags?

Glad you are ok. Doesn't look pretty

Mate had a 6 footer land on his bonet in a Dato 1200. Bent the front crossmember so it was touchingthe ground with the tyres still inflated.

I have only hit 1 so far and it didn't do any damage.

I do count the Roo's each day on the way to work.

I have too many skippy stories to relate here, but a classic one concerned my aunt who was driving a mini moke from the farm house down to the highway to check the mail, a western red came through the passenger side curtains of the moke, trashed the interior and missed my aunt with its claws by millimetres, then took the drivers side complete canvas cutain with it when it jumped out.

Skippy damage, through and through:eek:

BTW g'futtock, you ARE fortunate for having a bar, but those factory bars are Stainless and VERY tough. Get the chassis CAREFULLY inspected by the assessor, especially the front crossmember. If anyone has tried to straighten these factory LR bars, they'll know EXACTLY what I mean. I have trouble drilling holes in them:o

Apparently most of the force was higher up and the bars bent. The panel beater said he checked the chassis etc, and said it was all fine. Radiator, heat exchanger/condenser & fan, stuffed. He said it is about $6'500 ATM but will not know the exact figure till he pulls everything off

As for the factory bar being stainless, well I do not know anything about that, there was some evidence of surface rust where the bar that held the lights was welded to the upright. I believe there are some stainless steels that do rust a little bit. You may know a lot more that me on that.

He told me the orignal bar is no longer available through LR discontinued he was told and quoted on a winch bar from TJM

Some stainless steels do rust, but also stainless steel often can have rust stains due to traces of tool steel left on it from tools used to machine it, particularly drilling.

justinc - Most stainless steels work harden, which means they can be very difficult to drill unless you use a very sharp drill and a fairly fast feed to make sure that the drill does not spin on the surface without cutting, as if it does so, it will be almost impossible to drill.

Your right there John. I just had to fit a ARB winch bar to a 2000 110 after an insurance claim due to the unavailability of the factory bars.
The bar that came off this one was reversed into by a bobcat at about 25km/hr, it had tow rings in the front channel, and one of these was hole punched almost through the steel by the impact.
The centre bar was bent, and the whole bar had a twist/ distortion.

New winch bar looks better I think:cool:

Just had an update on the insurance claim.
The radiator, intercooler, and heat exchanger are stuffed, as well as the clutch on the fan.
The bloke rekons about $9500 without adding things up excatly.

The problem is that they need to replace the top air conditioning pipe as it has a bend in it and it is a U.K. supply part only (JUE 110330) :( So it looks like it will be off the road for a while yet. :(:(

UK supply from LR should be under a week...

Yep. that's what I intended, but alas, the radiator inter-cooler, etc. must be sent away to some bloke who is a specialist and he won't do anythhing but orignal parts on an insurance claim:mad::mad:

Geez mate

You were lucky in one way but unlucky in another.

I hit a Western red on morning on the way to Ayers Rock in a coach
The stupid animal hopped out and stood upright in front of me, Hit him at 110 kph. No bar on the coach.. $ 16000 damage. 1 headless roo and a lovely old english lady concerned if the animal would be ok.

Geez Louise !

I've lost count the number of Skippy's I've hit now, and I've never stuffed the (OE/ARB-300Tdi) bull bar like that, but I've been lucky that the biggest hit at the same speed as yours was when he was at the bottom of the hop and hit fair and square in the centre, right on the winch fair lead.
Stuffed the number plate and bent the steering damper and that was it, but geez it was a big hit.
