I might be being a we bit silly here... but the new Defender has a TDCI engine called a "Puma". People are now calling it a "Puma" Defender.
I thought why not call the TD5 by it's original name, "STORM" :D
Thoughts ? :D

Its all quite simple:
The new Defender is referred to as the Puma and TDCi. TDCi is also what Ford names a lot of its diesel engines.
The Td5 engine was code named Storm, but this was used in both Defender and Discovery as was the 200/300Tdi engine.
So for some reason people (probably starting in the UK) started to refer to the new Defender by its code name of Puma, something which doesn't apply to the previous models, only to their engines.

Is that a spelling mistake or a jibe :p
I still think we could call it a Storm Defender :D :D

dont bite their just jelous, i'm surprised there only picking up on it now when I have called my defender by puma since I owned it (over a year) as have all the defender owners in the PUMA section on defender2 website......
like I said what ever floats your boat if you want to call your td5's "storm" to feel special we will support you as PUMA owners ;) :p
i cant wait to see how many people it confuses :D
does that not mean that ranger rover sport owners now have to refer to thier cars as the range stormer? and paint it orange :D

:oops2: Fixed, spell checker missed that one... now where's the grammar checker:confused:
For some reason they never did use the name storm for anything other than the engine. Also, when you think about it, whilst they sound OK to those in the know, Storm Defender or Defender Storm or Discovery Storm are not really that catchy for the marketing types as Puma.
The one I could never work out is when I replaced my intercooler with a bigger one in my Td5 Disco it had THOR typed on a sticker on it.
If I remember on the weekend I'll try and get a picture of the large green sticker on the chassis of the Defender that says PUMA. Disco never had anything like this.

Let's not forget that Jaguar and the Defender are both produced by the same parent company... TATA  ... maybe we won't go there...

And that could apply to anything younger than 1987, guys can call eachothers cars Puma and Storm, petal and lilly. All a bit hippy to me personally.
We, the Isuzu owners have one thing you guys can never have. Almost a litre of displacement per cylinder.
Let us quickly compare a brand new Puma to my 23yr old Isuzu County ''The Turdis''
Puma has electronic traction control and antistall, so what
The Turdis has a 380kg 4BD1 over the front axle providing enough traction, plus try stalling one in Low Range.
The Puma costs $52000
The Turdis cost $54000 on the road in 1985 ( I have the receipt) houses cost less back then
The Puma has a 6speed box and can reach 120kph
The Turdis has 4 gears but can sit comfortably on 130kph all day without issues
The Puma has central locking and an imobiliser
The Turdis came out with deadlocks on the front doors
The Puma has a place for your cuppa on the rocker cover
The Turdis has the ability to Froth milk on the Rocker cover therefore a Cappucino is possible
The Puma has an upmarket dash and carpeted interior
The Turdis does too plus 9 seater capacity
The Puma has a LSV version in the SVX
The Turdis has one too, it's called a Perentie
The Puma has great reports from around the globe
The Australian built Isuzu County is regarded as the ultimate Land Rover by many around the globe.
Do I need to go on?

My initial thought is that following your logic would produce no change of name at all.
As i understand it, the new engine is popularly known as the Puma engine.
The previous engine was popularly known as the TD5.
I usually refer to my 1998 model as one of the last of the 300TDi Defenders.
The key here is not some obscure code name that might have been applied, but the popular name. It's a bit like the 48/215 always being referred to as the FX and the Morris Minor 850 being called a Mini. The popular name wins out over the official name.
So if your logic is applied, we will still have the 200TDi, the 300TDi, the TD5 and the Puma Defenders.
So we can all sleep at night knowing that there is no need for us to learn new names for our Defenders. :p

Hopefully today we'll actually have some "Storm" owners come on this thread and talk about the proposed new name.
So far we've just had tdi and isuzu owners tell us how good their engines are... LOL :D :D

I still think we could call it a Storm Defender :D :DDon't the Germans call some of the Land Rover products "Stormer"? I have definitely heard of Range Stormer, so IMHO the "Storm" Defender could get confusing.

Now if the Land Rover marketing bozos had gotten their act together and actually named the latest model (a'la Tdi, Td5 etc) and their bean counters could have seen their way clear to stump up the cash and stick a badge on it somewhere, then we would not need to waste time having this argument.
I mean come on, every other recent model is usually identified in conjunction with its engine configuration (Td4, TdV8, V8i etc.). Why not the new Defender? "TdCi" - it's only FOUR LETTERS - how expensive would a few stickers have been? I wouldn't even mind if they weren't put on straight - well maybe a little.
...so once again, it's ALL LAND ROVER'S FAULT!

It's just what you are used to.
Before the Storm engine was released (and long before I bought a Landie) I heard all about it from one of my mates who was consulting to LRA and it was always Storm, then, when it's released it gets a common alpha-numeric abreviation name which the great unwashed know it by..... :p
BTW, I'm pretty sure the 2/300Tdi was called Gemini....

Could not, would not, EVER, call my vehicle or it's engine "STORM"! Hate them - cheating arrogant, barstools.:D
Why don't we call Td5's Eels if we are going down the rename road.
Why? They have many of the Eels qualities
Highly talked about
Love em or hate em
People swear by em or at em
Overpriced
Under performing
Unreliable
Inconsistent
Developed from something that has a proud history, and whose dominance and glory days seem a long time ago! :D

The Turdis cost $54000 on the road in 1985 ( I have the receipt) houses cost less back then
The Puma has a 6speed box and can reach 120kph the puma can reach 120 and go on with out shaking your teeth out and you can still talk
The Turdis has 4 gears but can sit comfortably on 130kph all day without issues
The Puma has central locking and an imobiliser
The Turdis came out with deadlocks on the front doors yep and thats just plain dangerous
The Puma has a place for your cuppa on the rocker cover
The Turdis has the ability to Froth milk on the Rocker cover therefore a Cappucino is possible yep i'll give yeh that one wouldn't mind a nice latte out of the puma
The Puma has an upmarket dash and carpeted interior Has 7 REAL seat capacity with REAL SEAT BELTS THAT WONT FRACTURE YOUR PELVIS
Strange as I would of thought if was an australian built car how can the globe know what its like to own and drive?
