Well I bought a 2a and was thinking of fitting a V8 and Lt95 box into it, so I went out and bought all the gear ( V8, box, panels etc ) and then found out I would need to change the front axle to a stage 1 or similar plus update all the braking etc

So after alot of thinking I decide to buy Landyandy's stage 1 and start all over again:angel:

Waiting for new seating

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/11/469.jpg
Capstan winch fitted to front but will be removed as I don't want it

There is alot of things need doing like all the wiring is ????? but hopefully by new years there will be a stage 1 parked in the drive instead of the disco.

If anyone needs panels, g/box, v8 etc have a look in the markets as there all for sale including the 2a

I am watching with interest. I wouldn't have thought of putting those components into a series III. I like what you have done with the drawers.

But I do think keeping the fuel tank in the rear is better than in the passenger seat footwell. :p:D

I am not the best painter in the world and I did'nt bother to fix any of the dents or deep scratches as I thought it will look like that after I go off roading for the first time.

Other things done are

Front and rear brakes (which neeed adjusting)
Fitted rear tank and sender plus new fuel lines
New indicator, brake and tail and park lights
Fitted halogen head lamp conversion.

Still waiting for shocks and a few gaskets to arrive and then I can take it for a spin.
Plus I need to cut the rest of the checker plate parts for the rest of the car.

I like what you have done with the tread plate on the front guards. I have a large number of holes in mine that are there from the tools brackets. I never use them now and have been thinking of how to fill or mask them.

On the tread plate on the door insides, have you put sound deadening or insulation material inside them? And did you put something between them and the door frames to stop electrolysis?

Oh, one more thing. Will you be doing much off-road stuff? I keep bashing the lower rear corners where you've put the tread plate on the sides (I see yours were bent too) and have thought about doing the same but I wasn't sure if they would only increase the amount of damage (as it is the bent metal is easily bent back out again).

Cheers
Alan

agrojnr
19th February 2009, 07:54 AM
On all the doors (apart from the rear) there is sound deadening, I have not put anything in between the tread plate and the frames as later down the track I will be fitting a electronic anti rust unit which should stop that from happening.

The rear lower quarters were cut off by the previous owner and both sides were quite damaged so the panels tend to cover most of the damage.

The rear panels have also had some square tubing installed along the lower edge to give abit extra support.

I will take this offroad thats why I have gone down the route of fitting all the checker plate and also the race seats, plus once I save the money I will install a winch up front.

Plenty of bling there with the chequerplate :D As far is painting goes, agree to the fact that after a trip off-road it'l be scratched which then adds character

I am only going down this route because I am fitting race seats andn because the seat box is so bad I will be making a new on from 3mm plate.

So I thought bugger it if I do that I make a tunnel cover at the same time.

Its just a real pain that my autocad at home is stuffed so I have to do all the drawing at work hence the mock up shots.

Hangers are a standard item and not too expensive. Probably cheaper (time, etc.) to just buy some new ones, plus bolts and bushes at the same time. And while you're at it now is a good time to reset the springs.

If I may ask, what made you decide on scrapping the disco (I presume that was your red monster earlier in the thread?) and making this?

agrojnr
15th November 2010, 05:40 PM
I really liked the disco (apart from the engine) they have the best driver position going, but there boot is just too small.

So I ask swmbo about doing up a series again but then my mate had a stage 1 for sale (which I bought) and did it up but then thought I would bring it into the 21st centry.

So I thought what if I put the axles from the disco into the leaf sprung so I started to split the disco (no one wanted to buy it anyway).

When I started doing mock ups with spring mounts and such I started to run into problems as the drivers side mount was nearly on top of the pumkin but then I got the offer of the 110 chassis and the rest is history so too speak.

Its my 6th series and not my last but I want it to be very unusual so hence the custom firewall and aftermarket aircon. It will get efi in due course but for now it will run dual carbs.

Ive got ideas for my next project but that will be more of a comp car than a everyday driver

Adam

Guillocuda
15th November 2010, 07:37 PM
What engine was in the disco? 14CUX 3.5? or 3.9?

Am very interested in a 3.9 to put in my rangey...I have the 3.5 EFI in the vehicle at the moment, and a 3.5 out of a Rover P5 (or something) sitting in the shed...

agrojnr
15th November 2010, 10:36 PM
Nah my disco had a 200tdi (now in a series 3)

Don't bother with the 3.9 you will just use more fuel for not much gain.

I have a 10.5:1 block with I will build up once the funds are available but if you can find a 9+:1 block in a 3.5 get it (sd1 or late p6)

Adam

Guillocuda
15th November 2010, 11:21 PM
Or splash out an buy a 4.6? Am toying with the idea of that...fuel costs don't really concern me, because it's not a daily, but I am trying to keep engineering costs down. Just a standard tuned 4.6 would do me fine---that's more kilowats than a EFI 3.5 has horsepower!

"the v8 was originally out of a rover 3500 car, its a high comp 3.5" there we go. have the engine sump to carbs.. but don't want to use it because I want to keep EFI.

Anyway, I'll un-hijack your thread now.

Cheers,
Nick

Good stuff, interesting thread mate.

In your original post you mentioned the difficulties you'd have converting a 2a. Would these difficulties have been teh same with a standard s3 (i.e. not a Stage One). I prefer the look of the standard s# grille etc but would like a V8.

agrojnr
22nd November 2010, 06:12 PM
Yer they would be the same but you can fit a v8 into a series without too many problems and you can just fit a booster to the brakes

Apart from butchering the pedal box all you need to do is make a suitable spacer up so the distance if pedal travel is the same.

As you can see the m/c is sloping forward so the next job is to put the roof back on the line up the body and modify the plate to the m/c sits level.

Looking good Adam!

If you use chequerplate you will need to mill/grind a flay area for the lights. Might look a bit dodgy?

You could use alloy propellor plate, a bit thinner than checker plate and with smaller less "agressive" raised areas. If your lights have rubber backs and they are thick enough, you should be able to bolt them straight onto propellor plate. Either that or put another rubber behind the lights. I've bolted other rubber backed lights to propellor plate and they fit flush enough to not need to grind an opening out to fit them in.

Checker plate is this pattern.

Propellor plate or diamond plate is this pattern.

Not sure about pricing but it is lighter, non structural and shiny. I picked up a heap of new sheets and offcuts a while back from a signwriter's garage sale for next to nothing (less than scrap prices). Still have a few bits but I'm reluctant to use it on my SIII as I don't want to spoil the look.

From memory they call it foam sheild or form sheild grey on one side and silver on the other its about $35 a meter then I put roof lining material on top that is $40 a meter and all i used was spray on glue from there as well

Adam

pfillery
13th December 2010, 07:24 AM
You can get fabric from Spotlight or similar places called wonderwall (it is like very thin flexible carpet so it will stick round curves easilly - they use it on walls so you can stick velcro to it), very similar to roof lining but a lot cheaper at around $15 - $20 a metre, I've even heard of people lining boots and cargo areas with it as it is quite hard wearing. I used it when I had a picture framing business to have samples of frames on display stuck to it with velcro. Comes in a few different colours and is a cheaper like-for-like option for roof linings.
