I just thought I'd start a Fraser conditions thread. :)

I'm going up there in a couple of weeks and it would be great to hear from people that have been there recently. Stuff like what is the driving like, are there fish about, and are the marsh flies there :o

Thanks!

whatever you do Cap'n , take the longest surf rod you own, I've caught Bonito off the beach north of Indian Head, you just have to be able to cast a long way out to where you see the birds working.

Ok Cool. I have a new surf rod that I'll be taking. It's got heaps of mumbo. I'll look for the birds!

Don't mention the marsh flies. We nearly got chased from the island last year in March :o

Just a friendly bump as I am just over two weeks away from my annual pilgrimage.

Is any other AULRO guys or gals going to be "on island" between the 15th and the 22nd of December?

We're actually going on Sunday.. bit of a last minute decision to go.. decided only a few days ago.. mad rush to get all sorted. staying at kingfishers Sunday night.. then take things from there... got open camp permits for the mo. planning on coming back friday/saturday next week.. still deciding where to go etc. just me and the GF. first time on Fraser. not sure how it has been affected by recent rain so dont want to plan too much ahead.. will take the days as it comes. Also hoping to get some fishing in.. fun sheriff permitting. :D

Anyone been recently? an recommendations?

Ok, I'm back :)

After driving around most bits of Fraser I would have to say it's pretty easy going at the moment. Most bits South of Indian head have had some good rain so the inland tracks are firm and damp underneath. No one with a LR should have any trouble.

We went to the cape with Cewilson and it was all pretty easy. The only hard part was Ngala rocks bypass (completely impossible to go by the beach). The sand there is very soft. On the way up it was ok, but on the way back I got stuck. :o Luckily a quick tyre deflate and locking all the diffs up had the fender climbing out of the hole it had dug all on it's ownsome. :) All the other vehicles that went the same way got stuck earlier than I did :p If you go one track earlier you can have momentum for the tricky bit and should get through.

There is generally plenty of beach however on much of the Eastern beach lagoons have formed. Be careful doing an underbody wash with these as even though they may appear fresh with creeks leading in and out I tasted some and found they were salty.

:)

Eli is easily passable even at high tide with three quality crossings available. If you see my number plate in the vicinity please throw it in and pm me

On the way up Tewantin beach and Freshwater is easy. You can't get around the trees down between Double Island point and Rainbow at the moment though.

Thanks for the recent intel'. I was hoping on going up to the cape this trip as I have been a little hesitant about the bypass in previous trips.

Now you reckon a defender got stuck... oh what to do..

I should just suck it up and go for it.... but I would hate to get well and truly stuck with all those LC and Patrol types just waiting to pounce with belated advice!!

I watched a few try the bypass on youtube and it looked a little ruggard.

I had to laugh about the British backpacker who tried 9 times (with someone videoing) just to get past Indian Head. :D

I guess I will wait and see what happens with the weather conditions etc between now and the 15th.

Cheers

Sean

ay captain. we went to fraser in june stayed at eurong beach resort @ $135 a night for three people by the pool , i think thats a great deal , surf was good but thats when the wind blows offshore and brings bugs with it, when the wind blows from sea to the land (onshore)theres no bugs. we tried fishing 5klms either side of the resort but there was too much weed further driving up the beach showed no one fishing because of the weed its not there all the time though. good to stop at happy valley for a beer on the way back. sand was very dry never got stuck but then again i had 33x12.5 on my toyota troopy i didnt see anyone bogged .you will have a great time there cheers from leyland

Some of you people need to HTFU and camp instead of staying at "resorts".

Another friendly bump..

Does anyone have any recent intell. regarding conditions of the tracks, especially Ngkala Rocks?

I am guessing the rain has improved the tracks.

5 days and counting until I hit the sand....

I'm not sure if I mentioned but the bit I got stuck was easily passable by going up an earlier "chicken" track. Going South if you take the track before the last track it is easy to get up, and allows you to have a big run-up at the hard bit. The problem with the last bit is the hill is steep and soft and you get to the top with no momentum.

Honestly you should be fine. If you aren't there will quickly be a queue of vehicles behind you that need to rescue you so they can get through ;) As long as you aren't there after 4 I'd be quite confident about this. :)
