As stated my dip stick wont fit. It slides about half the way down and seems to hit something (engine/vehicle related of course:D:D). Its a series 3 - 2.6 rover motor. The actual housing for the dip stick is loose at the base, but I doubt that would stop any thing and I'm possitive I have the right dip stick for the right engine.
any ideas??
cheers

I have the same problem with mine. It's a question of turning it as you insert it. There's a bit of a knack to it. Once you get it once, you have to remember the position it goes in. Mine has a bend in it that has to be put in with the outer part of the bend facing the head.

I had this problem with one of my previous vehicles, I found it worked if you shoved it half in and jiggled it about a bit.

I'm surprised, not one dirty comment..ha ha
Thanks to those who replied, I'll try more wiggling, but I'm not sure it will work.
I think part of the issue is that the dip stick "sleeve" that mounts to the block is very loose and can move between 3-4 inches (at the top). How would one tighten this without removing engine parts, gaurds to get it in there? or could I glue it or something?
I geuss the next question is should the sleeve be in front of, or behind the exhaust manifold? I'm thinking behind, but not sure as it moves so far.

Looking in my engine bay, it is just behind the downpipe as it comes off the manifold.
I have the same problem with getting the dipstick back in, it is a cow of a job and requires a little patience (which I severely lack!).

I am sure I replied to this thread - I wonder if we have lost some posts?
Thee is an extension tube into the sump screwed to the bottom of the adapter at the base of the tube. I suspect it is a bit loose giving a step the end of the dipstick is catching in. Ideally remove the whole assembly and screw the bits back together again, using locktite. Failing that, the problem can probably be overcome by bending the very tip of the rod so it does not touch the side of the tube.

Thanks John, I'll gvie that a go. One of the porblems is I can't seem to unscrew the 'tube' as it hits the exhast etc etc. I'll figure something out. thanks again
