Mystery Knocking Noise from TD5

Righto.
I put the D2 into my local LR Dealer who are very knowledgeable and great to deal with as the disco has developed a Low pitched dull knocking noise on the off side of the engine bay.
They checked fault codes, removed the EGR valve cleaned and tested it, checked engine readings, inspected and cleaned the air filter, checked the air mass sensor, removed and refit the drive belt, inspected the crankshaft pulley and all was OK. The engine seems to be running fine and is not missing or down on power. They have never had a TD5 do this before and are at a loss as to what the noise is, but suggested possible problem with the valves. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH MY CAR???????????:mad::mad::mad:
Has anyone heard of this before?
I am the only bloke getting round with a TD5 Disco that sounds like a ringers ute fitted with a holden 308 with a lumpy cam!
any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Oil pump bolt perhaps? Though I would have thought that if that was it it would be all over by now.

Its not something loose or a stuffed engine mount is it?

Mind you if those guys can't find it... I'd be worried to. Give them my regards, just mention July, broken prop-shaft, blue D2, they'll will know who you mean.

Under what conditions is the noise heard - idle, cruising, accelerating, etc? Might it be a loose mounting for an ancilliary, eg PS pump, alternator or a loose wastegate in the turbo, or even loose gearbox bolts or starter motor?

So is it a constant knock "in time with the revs" of the crank?
OR is it a constant knock "slower but in time with the revs" of the crank?
OR is it a random knock "Not in time with the revs" of the crank?

If it is a mechanical knock ....Why didn't they use a stethoscope to isolate the sound??

Big end knock ... Piston knock ... Lifter Knock ... etc + more ;) ???

Unfortunately ... There are too many items to pick on with such a general description that you have mentioned .... USE A stethoscope to locate & isolate the position of the sound .... IF it is that loud .... It shouldn't be hard to find

Better still ... if it is motor noise .... and its loud on idle ... grab your mobile phone and .... take a movie with sound on it ...... and then up load it to this thread ... cause a picture says a thousand words :)

Grab a 3ft length of hose pipe, stick one end in your ear, and the other poke around until you find a louder noise. The hose pipe is particularly good for finding escaping exhaust gas noises. A long bit of broomstick works well for finding mechanical thumping sounds. If the noise does not change with engine load - then I would think it's less likely to be a bottom end $$$ noise. If it's just at idle and decreases with engine revs, then it could be something as simple as a worn drive belt. - Try squirting WD40 on the belts, does that stop the noise?
Is the clutch working the same as it used to? I have heard that the dual mass flywheels on TD5's are a wear items and can disintegrate.

But I agree - A decent mechanic should be able to find this easily.

Ok I had this happen to me when I first got my TD5. The owner gave it a service before he handed it over to me..Had it a week and this noise was giving me a bit of a fright...But all was well it turned out to be the oil filter in the head..The one that rotates... Cheap china type had been used.. had a thiner brass bush on the top..and the fins hit the houseing as it rotated.. Fitted a top brand one and noise went..a big smile was carried for awhile.. Hope this is of some help..Robert42
