Why only five security grilles on a Defender??

I saw the following post on another forum and would like to ask the same question here. It's very topical for me just now.

If anti-theft is the purpose, I've always been uncertain of the point of fitting a set of (only) five window grilles. Anyone who wants to break a window only needs to take a couple of steps to one of the remaining four, or the windscreen. If this kind of "security" is to be at all realistic, grilles, some of them detachable, are needed all round, which means a total of ten grilles (including the two little ones at the back).

What's your opinion?

The security is more for cargo (stored in the rear, usually behind a cage)

And also when the sliding windows are open.

Would be handy if sleeping in the vehicle for some slight protection from wildlife too...

As for security, sliding windows are easy... The others require breaking the glass...

If someone wished to do that, no grills would stop them as they would just bust a lock!

What Tombie said. From what I've been told the sliding windows aren't very secure at all.

The one's dullbird and muddymech have looked very good. One of the things I'm considering for vehicle security is a set of these for when we do our circumnavigation of the country next year. The big issue is that there would appear to only be one cargo barrier available for the Puma and so as Tombie pointed out, this still gives access to the rear. I'm almost inclined to import the LR dog guard, but I don't know what the legalities are of putting in a non-ADR approved barrier:confused:

I was at a service station once when wifey and I both left our keys in the Defender and locked the doors. We managed to force a sliding window open quite easily then with a stick reached past the cargo barrier to unlock the left rear door. It didn't require much force and I have been concerned about other people finding out that it is so easy. Not so concerned that I bought security grilles though. Yet. I did consider replacing the windows with fixed ones, that would stop the rattle too.

Jeff, I'm surprised you went to that much effort... You can usually unlock a Defender with pretty much anything.

I have fitted a full set of Scorpian Racing security grills from Rovacraft (VIC) - which cover rear side windows, back small windows and rear window (internal guard rather than external of course). I believe these are the same as Dullbird's. I also fitted an ARB cargo barrier - soooo the combination forms a "cage" enclosing the whole cargo area. In addition I've fitted a movement and impact alarm (no details here !!) which covers the whole interior - including the cargo area. I think that that's all I can do... never had any problem even though it lives on the street.

Those would be nice for the insides of my D2 to keep things off the glass.... and even more so, to prevent things moving off my rear shelf and sitting on top of the rear door lock button.

Yes these are the same as our's:)..although we were originally going to get internal as we thought they would just last longer as once you start scraping trees on them and stuff they will rust..but then decided best to get external for our trip so we can deflect any rocks that might get flicked up and hit the window.....and when they get old and tired will derivett and 2 pack or powder coat.
