Hi all,
This is all on a Disco1 1994 update MY95 serpentine belt 3.9 V8.
Before I pull out and strip my Magnetti Marelli alternator, I've got a question for the good members of the board.
Problem one is it isn't charging. Driving along this morning and the charge light came on and the tacho stopped and dropped to rest position.
I have power to the back of the alternator on the battery cable but only .66v on the D+ wire.
If I connect 12v to the D+ connection then the charge picks up to about 12.8v at idle however it also makes the alternator vibrate slightly and with a dull whine while making the revs drop. It has no effect on the non functioning tacho.
This dull whine and vibration has been noticeable on and off in general driving but I thought it was clutch related for various reasons.
I also suspect it hasn't been charging properly for a little while. I have a Traxide SC-80 and the second battery (tested after the problem today) is measuring about 10.5v and the start battery at 12.1 volts. It is also sometimes a little slow to wind over. Barely noticeable but I did.
The batteries are on charge now in the car.
I've had the alternator apart about 18 months ago to change the bearings so I know how to get it all apart but just after thoughts on the problem. Would rather fix than replace due to expense and not too keen on fiddling with brackets and pulleys to fit an aftermarket job.
Quite similar to this one inside from memory. Surprisingly enough.

I'm getting picked up shortly, thanks to this, to go to a bucks party so won't be doing anything til tomorrow.
Thanks guys for any insight you might have.
I assume it is the regulator but I'll let you guys battle it out :)
