Hello everybody, :)

My RR has devolped an all new foible . . . i'm driving along, the fuel warning lamp will illuminate for a tiny flash, and the engine will just stop. No coughing, no spluttering, just stop, as if the ignition had turned off. Sometimes the fuel light will flash and the motor will stumble but recover.

It does this on LPG and Petrol. Sometime it won't do it for hours of driving, sometimes it will do it every 20 meters of driving . . .

I really hope it isn't dodgy ignition wiring because its a rats nest in there! A simple fuel pump replacement would be nice. Hopefully i'll get a chance to look at it this week.

If anyone has any ideas or expertise they could share, i would be super dooper grateful!

Old electrics ... I take it that it is a 1980 RRC

Can you confirm

Motor ...... rover 3.5 V8 or something else?
Fuel system ...... Carbi or EFI
Fuel pump ........ Manual or electric?
Dizzy ............... Points or Electronic?
Alternator light on dash ....... Does it have a "slight glow" and get brighter as you turn on headlights?
Has it been recently overheated ... or been having heating issues lately?

Hi,

I have a 74/81 hybrid 2 door and have dealt with all these sort of issues over the years.

If it does this on gas it won't be the fuel pump. My first suggestion would be to take off the cover on the steering binnacle, so that the ignition switch is exposed. Start it up and wiggle the bit that all the wires come out of the switch. (LHS looking at it from the seat) If it dies you've found the prob.

It is very common for the internals to wear inside the switch and give all sorts of intermittent ignition faults. The switch is replaceable, but $$$$. It can be taken apart and the copper contacts 'extended' which will last for awhile.

Always be careful when you remove/replace the binnacle cover because there are lots of wires and sharp edges that can cause shorts.

good luck! DL

Its a 3.5 v8, carby etc etc . . .

SPEAKING of heating issues it hasn't been overheating but it's been running a little hotter running temp than usuual and pumping coolant out the reserve tank overflow every now and then. . .
