We are about to buy a 50l Waeco

I have been told the standard D2 power plug and wiring is not heavy enough to run them and I wish to connect to my second battery.

Can some one please advise what size wiring and type of plug to run so I can connect them to my second battery please.

Cheers

Hi
I have Evacool fridges (same compressor) the older of the two has a pretty high low voltage cut out point. However both fridges cut out as nearly as soon as the charging source is removed – (engine stopped, or no sun on solar panels) – when run through standard cig lighter plugs both on the boat and in car.

I’ve used 6(sq mm) cable and the plugs below - not had a problem since

Give drivesafe (Traxide) a PM, he has all the gear for what you are doing and also lots of good info on the correct way too do it.

There have been a couple of threads on a similar subject lately - maybe try a search.

Waeco make a fridge wiring kit specifically for this - a RAPS something or other - I've used those and they are easy to fit and have the right sized wiring for your needs - I think they're about 80 bucks.

If you wanted to save a bit you could buy the cable and bits and make up similar yourself. I think I used about 10 mm cable for mine, just cause it was free.

I think you'll find Drivesafe (Traxide) has all the bits you need in a kit and it'll cost you less, or be better than anything you buy commercially. All his details are at www.traxide.com.au (http://www.traxide.com.au) I think, or just google it.

Piddler he gets a bit busy but is definitly worth while.

i have fitted out (dual battery and rewire) my boat pretty much exclusively with his stuff and it all been very good quality.. just need a little patience getting hold of him :D

I have most of the stuff now for doing the d2 second battery.. apart from the one thing he doesnt sell... time!

Thanks

Steve

ps i run an engel with no problem from the rear.. they should only draw about 2.5a and voltage drop shouldnt be that bad i wouldnt of thought.

Hi and thanks for the plugs folks.

Piddler, we are having lots of fun and games with some locals ( but thats another story ), so it’s hard to get me before 10 AM your time because of daylight saving but you will get my answer machine after that if I’m not there and I’ll get back to you.

Engel fridges will run in just about any set-up but Waeco fridges are for some unknown reason ( they both use the same compressor ) are very voltage sensitive and need to have heavy cable run to the rear to minimise voltage drop.

I think you will find that Waeco use a Danfoss compressor & Engel have their own Sawafuji system.

they both use the same compressors, however they use different motors to drive the compressor, the engel being a sawafuji swing motor, thats the way i understand it..

Thanks

I will add my support for drivesafe's isolator.

I also use and highly recommend the 2 pin plug that harlie has. You may need to cut the ciggy lighter socket of the waeco cable, but those 2 pin plugs are far better.

You can get the mating 2 pin socket with a similar connection to the lead as for the socket. Or sockets that mount on a bulkhead.

Anderson plugs are better still, but not necessary for what you want.

There is a definite need for a suitable plug and socket system for 12 volt use in this area.

I personally like the Anderson 30 amp PowerPoles.

These connectors are very small compered to other devices, they have a continuos current rating of 30 amp while other devices are only 10 or at best 20 amps.

The only problem with them and I consider it a major draw back, is that they are not available in a two pin flush mount arrangement.

Strangely they are available in a 4 pin flush mount set up, which is not much use for what we are all looking for.

From the Engel website FAQs .....

Fridge - What type of compressor does Engel use?

Engel's World Famous Sawafuji Swing Motor

Unique to Engel this purpose built compressor is designed to be a portable refrigeration compressor and is one of the key reasons why ENGEL is 'A LEGEND IN RELIABILITY'.

What is the first rule in engineering? -

Keep it simple!

The other plug & socket worth looking at is the Engel one, the end screws off the cigarette lighter plug & then it will plug in to their own socket using a screw collar to hold it in.
It is the only plug that I have used that hasn't vibrated out in the Outback.
