Freelander starting trouble

G'day all!
Silvia's recently purchased Freelander (Td4, auto, MY´03) has recently been playing up and refused to start at some occasions, usually after having been driven for about an hour or so. After the engine being turned off for a few minutes up until half an hour it refused to start, although cranking freely. After waiting for a certain amount of time (from another half an hour up to several hours) the car will start without any problem.
The fault occurs intermittently, so you never know when incidents will occur, but recently we had two consecutive events. We have checked for
fuel (tank is sufficiently filled)
vacuum in the tank (unlikely)
fuel leaks (none discovered)Any suggestions how to sort out this annoying fault are welcome!!!

This is a double thread - it is also in the tech section.

As I indicated there - as we all know landies with electronics are always keen to indicate an issue - so is the check engine light on?

If not it is unlikely to be a direct engine issue - then possibly a fuel lift pump issue or blocked fuel filter. If it were anything to do directly with the engine the check engine light would be on.

Oh - just a thought - the check engine light hasn't blown a light bulb has it? When the ignition is switched on it should illuminate and go out as soon as the engine fires - or maybe after a few seconds - not sure on a TD4 - it should lite up as soon as the ignition is switched on.

Yep, this is a double post (didn't know how many will be in this section here and the tech section is more frequented). The engine warning light is working, and doesn't come on other than on start up.
I suspect now the camshaft sensor, but since I don't have access to a test book until at least the end of this week I will have to continue investigating. So if anyone has some more suggestions I will happily try these out as well.

The last Freelander diesel with similar symptoms that I was involved with required a full wiring loom replacement! :eek:

Could be, but normally the check engine light would come on - and the engine may not start at all. I do think it is time for the test book.

The best of luck with it - I have the opposite - engine runs OK but check engine light is on - I believe it is a failed engine coolant sensor and the ECU is running on default settings. Mine also will need to go on the test book - what a pita.:mad:

No luck with the test book http://www.landroveraddict.com/smf/Smileys/default/bawling.gif, i.e. no fault codes came up. Does this mean the sensors are alright? Any other suggestions??? Could it be the fuel pump cutting out intermittently (as suggested by a mechanic). It still makes its noise (when I listened anyway).

Still sounds like a loom replacement job to me.

The Freelander I was involved with (I used to work at a Dealer) displayed the same sypmtoms. No fault codes, no check engine lights. It would just refuse to start sometimes when hot.

Almost every sensor was replaced, injectors replaced, engine wiring loom replaced. None of it made any difference.

Complete vehicle wiring loom replacement cured the fault. As suggested by the LR Australia Technical department.

Might pay to get the Cam Sensor checked out , it can cause hot start poroblems.

Hope you have sorted your problem out, if not, my td4 04 had the very same hit and miss non start. Would turn over ok..
When it does start and you get into second, plant your foot, if it slowly acc. then your feel the turbo cut in, around 2500-3000 rpm and you take off to the moon, head is throwen back (dont forget to change gear), it's your fuel feed pressure pump. Mines beside the tank, next to the sub frame.
Once the fuel pump was changed, it would start every time and the acc was strong through all gears at low revs.
Bad news, pump was $600, good news, it was replaced under warranty.
