OK you lot of 'house brick' drivers;
I have, in the last week, had 2 Defenders in for work to be done. The first, an immaculately kept LATE 1993 200Tdi 110 with factory air and rear discs, we replaced the clutch and all the brakes/discs, rear axles, power upgrade /tweaking etc. The second, another 110 exactly the same age as the first, but without A/C. It was recovered by me on Sunday from Bruny island with a broken (original) clutch centre.
BOTH of these vehicles are 1 owner. BOTH have travelled in excess of 280,000km, BOTH are in fantastic condition and will continue service until the owners pass away(Both are in their late 60's) and are reliable enough to drive the cape NOW.
This model is my absolute favourite, the 200tdi engine, factory A/C, rear disc brakes.
So, if you own one of these, LOOK AFTER IT AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT... It will NOT let you down:D:D:):)
I love my job:D:D:D:D:D

I have a 92 200 Tdi, rear drum brakes no air-con with 290,000 klms. It has been down the Hay River track, and along ther Madigan Line, out to Geosurveys Hill and apart form some usual oil leaks she has never let me down.

Before the last trip I had ATV here in Sydney give the Red Terror the once over. They did engine and gearbox mounts, wheel bearings all round, new shocks full service and a new radiator. I had reservations about the clutch but they reckoned it was fine.

I am planning to do a trip up to the Cape either next year or the year after and think I should get the clutch done before doing this. As the Red Terror is a weekend vehicle at the moment I think it will wait until the next big trip.

Until I win Lotto and get myself a brand new Fender the old girl will see me through.

Hi Chenz,
I would do the clutch. This one had NO warning, it just lost drive. When I removed it all the springs fell out and the centre was just rotating. The friction material was only worn about 40%:o
Age and the constsnt diesel rattle had broken the centre rivets etc.
I wouldn't buy a new one, this one is a keeper;)

In 1966 I had the centre break out of the clutch plate on my 2a diesel at quite low mileage - in the middle of the Simpson Desert.

My dad bought a TDI new in 93. It took till three years ago to pries it away from him. It has about 240 000 km's. Disc rear & Air con.
Love it
The "adjustment" to the injection pump.
Is it worth doing?
The drive train handles the extra power OK?
Does it change the fuel econ much?

Not worth doing at all, and at that km's, I suggest I'd take it off your hands before it becomes a liability:p:p:p:p
Seriously, Make sure it stays in the family, these ones will last at least 30 odd years easily:):)
The adjustments are well worth it, 1.6mm pump plunger lift, a wastegate adjustment (as these only run 10psi from the factory, and can easily handle 14psi, ) and pump tweaks will make it into a different vehicle. Tappet adjustments are critical for good performance, 200Tdi's can be done at 20,000km intervals.
I love these engines, they are a true workhorse, bit like a small 4BD1 really...
BTW, I love the Tablelands, does it need a LR specialist up there?

Closest LR place is in Cairns. Takes me hour n quarter to get there.
There are a few LR here. Would you believe a 200 TDI lives across the road.
All the people I have spoken to aren't real happy with the follow up service in Cairns. One person I know will travel to Townsville for work on their vehicle to be done. Personally my LR wont ever go there.

G'day Pat,
I love the 300 too, especially to work on as they are far simpler and easier to replace timing belts and water pumps etc etc etc.
It's just that the 200Tdi is based almost squarely on the series 2.25 and 2.5 diesels, that they are near on bulletproof.
Also, the 200 dosen't have anywhere near the problems with vac pump oil leaks, timing belt breakages, P gasket leaks, rear main seal leaks etc as the 300 does.
But, got to love ALL LR products equally and without bias, or they may get upset.:):D:p

Some facts regarding my 110 300tdi
Fuel economy when first purchased-14l/100k
removed full length steel roof rack with associated driving/fog lights across front of rack-12l/100k
fitted gas-8l/100k
had injector pump overhauled and set to standard specifications. Last trip down the south coast and return vehicle used 7.5l/100k including flying up the hill from the gong at 80kph in top gear all the way.
110's....waw to go!!!:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

Hard to say JC. You dont know till you try.:spudnikcoinflip:
Anyway there is a bit of dirt road that everyone raves about not too far away so it wont be a wasted trip. The tar is creeping ever northward
The syncro on second gear is a bit sad on mine. It has a "chat" to me on change down if I dont blip the throttle.

Second gear synchro hubs are a problem with the LT77, they have upgraded ones available now.
We go to Atherton everytime we are in north QLD, love the town and its environs, did some excellent day trips around there.
I've been thinking about having a kind of 'base' up there for a while now, must look at property prices again...;)

Atherton has a very mild climate. In the three years we have been here only one frost and you had to search for any ice. The humidity in Cairns is frightful but up here on the hill its not bad at all.
As we came from Goulburn (near Canberra) we like the climate.

Well, today finished the latest 110 200Tdi, the one I recovered on Sunday with the broken clutch centre. I am in heaven after driving ANOTHER shining example:D:D:D New heavy duty 130 spec clutch, fork, spigot bushing, park brake shoes, tappets and boost/ fuelling upgrade done.
It pulls well, is quiet and tight to drive with Bilsteins on, and after 285K is in exceptional nick.:)

JC, I love your enthusiasm. If you were anywhere near me you'd get my business.
Thats the gasket between the water pump housing and the block face on a 300Tdi. It is a common site for water leaks, and it is called that for its shape, sort of like the letter 'p' lying horizontally.
Enthusiasm? Is there any other way to own/ drive and repair landies???:)

My old mans 130 300Tdi has it, so did my old Defender
I was told its not urgent, just keep the coolant up to it. As they are expensive to be fixed (having to pull the front of the motor off?
Dunno if this is right? (Ill stand corrected) :(
Thanks

If the front case coolant gasket on a 200Tdi leaks, yes it is a major job. 300Tdi p gasket job about 1 hour and small change for the gasket. (1 hr includes flush cooling system and new coolant etc etc.)

Nice to see people still or did like the 200TDI.......
Just brought mine and it has it share of problems, but getting through them slowly.
Latest ones to pop up are running a tad hot and seems the brakes are not working like they should... The rear in particular dont seem to work.
Mine has done about 350k kms. Dont know its history.
