Hello Everybody,
Could someone please explain what the following axle piece is"stub distance piece" and where they go and whether front and or back. I am presently repLacing the axle seals in my 2a and these metal rings were provided with the axle seals. Any help advice would be great please.
Regards Ben.

I think it must be 599698, "distance piece for bearing sleeve", usually known as the seal running sleeve. This is shrunk onto the stub axle and provides the running surface for the seal, but is also the shoulder that the bearings are against. To install it, the old one needs to be removed. Not a separate part on late Series 3 stub axles.

G'day All, JD has described it well, but if you had the wksp manual for the S2A it shows how to remove the old one and install the replacement, it is quite easy cheers Dennis:angel:

My parts Catalogue does not show that part number JD! But it does show a 'Oil seal for inner bearing' as part number 239492 (GHS202)...it does show various mudshields one for the bevel pinion bearing and one for the driving frange ...549454 and 549453....or am I likely to be completely off track....Oh almost forgot it shows a 'distance piece for bearing' as being part number 244151 which sits behind the halfshaft bearing. page 04 73 of the IIA Parts catalogue

That piece is the distance piece for the bearing on the inside end of the U-joint in the front swivel - and the bit pictured could be that; the picture is not good enough to be sure. However, I interpreted the original question to be referring to the hub seals.

Note that you seem to have a different edition parts book to me. My book has page 1H 03 - 05 as the relevant pages - the inner spacer is shown to the left of the swivel ball, the outer one, which I think it is, outside the end of the stub axle. My book is RTC9840CC April 1987.

G'day Benny_11A :)

That does look like the inner wheel bearing oilseal running surface "Distance Piece for inner bearing" Part No 217351- 2 only front, and 2 only rear, they are/were supplied with the 239422 oil seals,
from Master parts book 605957 December 1968.

they were a chop off with a cold chisel and heat and fit(shrink fit) replacement if the one on the axle tube was grooved.

It also acted as a spacer for the inner bearing.

cheers

Thanks everyone for their help, the part was the piece the bearing seal runs on, for the front stub axle. Regards Ben.
