View Full Version : leaking auto transmission pipes

Hoping someone can advise, Disco tdi 1998 and I have leaking oil cooling pipes from the transmission. Is it worth getting them repaired and putting replacable hoses in so future repairs are easier or is it just as easy to buy them? Have the rave cd but can't find any info on it about repairing these leaks. Can someone tell me if I have to remove the muffler pipe and radiator? or any other fixtures as I don't know how else I can get to the transmission end of the pipe. Any help would really be appreciated.

Where are the pipes leaking from? Rare would be the leak from the metal to metal flare unless it's been butchered.
Are the flexible hoses leaking at either end or are they leaking from the body of the hose? Clean them off with degreaser, then run the car to check where the leak actually is.
Report back and that'll give a better clue to the fix.

It looks like the pipes are seaping where the flexible hose joins the metal coupling. Would it be a viable option to replace the hoses with removable sections rather than the way they are at the moment?

I have a 98 model auto tdi Disco. Just in the last 3 months I have tossed the old 3 row auto cooler at the front and replaced it with a 10 row cooler from a p38 range rover. What prompted the change? Two things. The first being the auto was getting too hot when driving the car in low range sand and towing heavy loads; and the second reason was that our cooler hoses were leaking as well. One more than the other (the one closer to the turbo dump pipe from memory). They were leaking from the flexible hose to compression fitting just like you're describing.
As I was going to need to replace the hoses I decided to do the upgraded cooler at the same time, which meant I had to get custom made hoses made up to suit the new cooler fittings. Enzed made up the two hoses for me for a little over $250. They put a swivel fitting on one end so made the installation a heck of a lot easier.
I was told not to bother with replacing the originals with new OEM ones as they'll just leak again, whereas the enzed replacements are much more sturdy and look like they'll outlast the rest of the car.

Pirtek repaired hoses for about $140. No swivels, just did a good job on the flexible bits.
You have to take the whole hose out (from cooler to trans) to make sure the angles and all match.
Take their advice if a better idea is presented.

:opierre do i need special tools to remove hoses and do i need to remove exhaust etc to get at hose where it joins the auto thanks once again

No special tools required and no, the exhaust can stay put for the whole removal, reinstallation process.
Be warned though, the expletives will run thick and fast when trying to undo the top hose connection on the gearbox itself :mad::mad::angrylock:*&^&*%^$$&^^*(*^#@. I managed quite a few 4 letter words in the process, but if your patient, the nut does eventually undo and retightening it when Pirtek or Enzed have done their magic takes time again, but it can be done.....:D

Just had my Tranny lines done at enzed in dandenong. Cost me $135. Fixed in an hour. No more red leaks!!
Be careful with the O rings when you pull the lines out. If they look even slightly damaged replace them. They are a Genuine part only I believe. Oh yeah its a 24mm spanner on mine.

They just about all leak. Here in NZ we use ENZED fittings as well. No problems after that.
