G'day All,
Well its time for the huge double cabin tent to go...as quite simply I would have gone on more trips this year had I a simpler setup...ie weekend trips away with the club. I have been looking at a few tents and my requirements for tenting would be:
Quick and easy to set up.
Most likely would need roof racks by what I have seen...not just cross bars as I have now.
To sleep 1 adult and 3 children.....for bigger trips and if SWMBO was coming with bubs would hire a trailer.
I guess have room for 4 blow up mattresses and a bit of room for storage. It really isn't for long stays, moreso for long weekends. The current tent is great for long stays...but a bastard to set up on your own...hence for those trips would hire a CT.
Tents I am currently considering are:
Oztrail Tourer Canvas Tent 9 Plus
Oz Tent RV 4 ...
Black Wolf 240 and 240 Lite....for this sort of camping....preference.
And now that I have seen them in other threads the Freedom Tourer and Southern Cross. There is quite a variance in costs from $300 to almost a grand. I am going to look at some, hopefully this weekend to guage size etc when I have the kids with me, but also interested in peoples thoughts on some of the choices for this type of camping, thanks in advance,

Mate - you probably know I have the Freedom Northern Tourer tent, so I'm limited to experience with this type of tent.
It is good in that it is easy to put up and take down - 4 corner pegs and a pole in the middle. Kat likes it because she can stand up in it - rather than have to crawl around like you need to do in some other tents.
The materials are high quality (20 Oz Bradmill canvass).
There is plenty of room, its quick and easy - but it weighs 20 odd kg so you get the daily workout lifting it onto the roof.
It served as our home for a quarter of this year and was fabulous. But it costs over a grand. We consider it worth the money as it will give many years good service with some basic maintenance. Put up - pack away - 5 minutes tops.

go the OZ tent RV4 really really simple to put up withstands shocking thunderstorms...will be testing ours again this weekend.....only drawback it is 2mtrs long so has to go on the roof....on the plus side it can be the last thing to pack up.
I would have thought the Sothern Cross & Freedom ones would be too small.

Your right Scallops they are exxy, had a look at the Freedom Family Tourer.... $1599 compared to the oztrail similiar set up in size etc at $399.00. For what I am looking for Id go more for the oztrail as $1200 gets a lot of other bits and pieces. With the Oztent RV4, Mrs HH, comfortable room for 4 plus a bit of spare space for a few bits and pieces??

we haven't got a RV4 ours is smaller as there is only 2 of us:D ours has plenty of room for 2 single matresses and room for the bag. You can also buy walls for the awning which would make another room.

the Freedom Family Tourer.... $1599 compared to the oztrail similiar set up in size etc at $399.00.
There's a reason for that. ;)
The Freedom and Southern Cross ones do come up in Trading Post etc from time to time - I got ours through there - only used once and about 40% off new price.

The Oz tents are probably the easiest to setup, but the size is a hassle sometimes. I have the RV4 and its used just for me and the fiance. I wouldnt want to squeez too many more people into it unless it was only a toddler.
You coudl get a rv4 for parents and a rv2 for kids and join them together like a single tent with sides, but this would cost a packet! The oztents are very well made though.

p.s - just chuck the kids in swags!

Can you tell me what the reasons are, as I had a look at similiar SC tent and that was $1750. What are you getting for your extra $1200-1500.00, especially if you are only going to be using it for weekends away as goal is to get a camper trailer down the track. What is a $1500 tent going to give over the $400 considering they are all roughly the same size/weight and set up and all are canvas. I have the oztrail huge mutther of a tent at the moment and it was around $1500 at the time and aside from size and time to put up with one adult and a cupple kiddies trying to help...it has been a good tent.

Freedoms are definitely worth it.It is the quality of the materials. But these are not what you are after.I would be saving the 12 hundred for more important stuff.I have just bought a $40 dome tent for this purpose while i wait for a roof toper. With kids in the picture i would get one that you can stand up in.Just my 2c worth.

I have a oztrail centre pole tent , Ive had it the best part of 8 years it gets used at least 10 + times a year
Freinds that have come away with me that have all had those stupid dome tents and have since all bought a oztrail centre pole tent
The only drama ive had is the zip has died , Not bad considering it gets used so much:D
I highly recomend the oztrail:cool:

Before I bought my camper I used a centre pole tent. It was medium quality 2.7x2/7.
My wife and two kids were quite happy using it on a 6 week trip to Darwin. My wife and I camped in it for 100 nights on a trip to Broome.
It is not quite as quick to put up as some others because it has more vertical walls than some that have the frame fixed around the top.
However it was still very quick and simple. Slip four poles into sleeves around the top, drive in four pegs and raise the centre pole. My 10yr old son could erect the tent in less time than it took me to get the chairs, table, stove, food, sleeping bags and air beds out of the back of the LR. An Oztent might be erected in 30 secs, but I didn't mind spending an extra 90 -120 secs for the sake of something that was a lot easier to store in the back of the LR.
It is easier to store than something like the Oztent and has more standing room than a dome tent.
Even though it was mid-price range and had a lot of use over 20 years, the only repair needed was a new vertical zip on the door. It was actually only the metal slide that wore out.
I'm sure that the top of the range tents are better quality, but a mid-price one can do the job very well and can last a long time.

I'll chip in and say I'm very happy with the Black Wolf 210. Plenty of room for the 2 of us and very easy for one person to assemble or disassemble.
I personally don't like centre pole tents but they are by far one of the quickest to erect. As for the Oz Tent, the physical size of it when folded up was what I didn't like, you'd definitely need a roof rack, which I didn't have but will soon, when my Hannibal arrives:)

Thanks for all the feedback, having even something that took 1/2 and hr to set up would be a godsend compared to setting up the current behemoth. Am also going to get an oztrail Gazebo so we can set up table and chairs for eating etc for the kids. 2009 is going to be the year I get back into the things I love with my children and mates......14mths of no camping sucks ,

Ok, went out and looked at some tents today...didnt get to see all the ones I wanted, but I learnt one thing.....I should take SWMBO more often :D. We are both pretty keen on the Oztent, simple, easy can add almost another room at ease...in fact possibly looking at 2 of them to join up...one for kids...one for us and bub and the two joined will create a decent awning/ undercover. As for length of it, Im looking to get a roof rack anyway, plus at this stage with general weekends away, I would be taking my trailer, so easy to throw everything in there along with bikes etc. If I go by myself or the older kids, we just need to take one tent. Looks like a good camping year for 2009 :D, be good as havent been with the better half, only kids so far....

Good stuff...the Oztents are quality tents...especially if the price tags says anything. We are stoked with our Rv4.
Also check out their new product they have made in conjunction with Rhino roofracks - Rhino Rack - Foxwing Awning by OZTENT (http://www.rhinorack.com.au/AccSubCategory_Foxwing-Awning_56.aspx)
Apparently the Oztents can zip up to it and it covers both the rear and side of the car! I think Im going to get one.

Hey Angus,
Good to know..checked out the link...pretty impressive. We'll most likely go with an RV5 and either and RV3 or 4 and the panels, therefore creating an awning plus an insect free room at the same time. Reckon Ill be camping every chance I have with this type of set up :D,

Angus Yeah, when he had a look at the RV4 today and another one packed up in a bag...thought good luck getting that in the D2...hence in part on my other thread looking at roof racks. Compared to my current tent that I cannot get back into bag and with combo of tent and poles etc it around 60-70 kilos and a cuppla hrs set up on ones own...this option is getting me very excited...especially as SWMBO gave the green light ( not that I need the green light of course ...I wear the freakin pants round this joint:cool:.....cripes I hope she doesnt go for her once in a while peruse of AULRO :()

i picked up an oztrail tourer 9 plus which was used over new year.
compared to the dome style very easy to setup and can be done by one person aswell. even better is the side pole kit that removes the center pole, gives plenty of space. still to use in the wet so not sure if my pre-soaking it has worked yet as far as leaks

Congrats etc on the Oztent, I am sure you will never regret it.
I have RV3 and am wrapped it it, no panels etc yet, we just use it as an extra room when the camper is full of bods who don't like tents.
Me - I'd sleep in the tent every time.
Put some shade cloth down and put the tent up on that.
NEVER pitch it and not put pegs in the ground - wind can get under it and do damage.
When packing up unpeg all except front corners and pull the apex over you to the ground, easy to sweep out sand, mess etc.
This also exposes the floor so it will dry quickly.
It can be easier to roll the front awning up on the ground while it is in this position too.
When all folded up, put the bag OVER the tent and tuck in, then roll it over and do up the zip, MUCH easier than trying to lift the tent into the bag.
Don't forget to post us some photos of it all together.
cheers

Cheers Its going great guns...have used it on 10 trips this year through rain, thunder, strong winds, heat and cold.
At Fraser Last week......did get hit by strong winds.....just had to adjust front awning and do pegs better ( well mates did this...I was a little..umm...errr....pizzled :D). This is full set up...Side and Front Panels + Fly.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/10/596.jpg
With the last night in Fraser...it really was blowing a gale...yet in the awning section with front and side panels.....it killed off the wind and was able to cook dinner no probs in there and eat.....though sitting in chairs...no table. What can I say...I love it and gets myself and the kids outdoors and camping in no time.
I would definately recommend the fly.....had it up at Sundown in a pretty big downpour...yet could have the tent windows all open as the fly kept the rain off...plus helps in the warmer mths and is easy to put up.
For longer stays...the front and side panels give a closed off area to keep food etc in without being subject to the elements. Adds a little extra time to set up...but again easy.

I tend to peg mine out before I erect it if it's windy because even if you're standing in it, it can get picked up by the wind. I agree with the shadecloth too, keeps the underside of the floor a lot cleaner.
I've used mine in some pretty shocking storms with no fly and it's held up fine - no leaks - and it's comical putting it up in the rain when others are struggling with their dome tents which fill up with water until they get the fly on.
I like the side panels in bad weather too, gives great protection. Bit fiddly to put up alone so I only use them if I'm staying somewhere a couple of nights.

i've had the rv3 for a few years, as well as many trips in the UK (where I live!) it's done Europe and N Africa, all sorts of weather, all sorts of ground conditions - AND I'M YET TO BEND ONE OF THE SUPPLIED TENT PEGS!!!
Guess you also have the same attachment, but I often use a caravan fitting - threads into caravan awning channel then zips to the front flap. As well as using it with the family caravan, I have screwed some caravan awning onto the rear of a roof bar on the Defender - this works well when its extremely windy and works with the basic rv3 or the side+front panels. Will see if I can find a piccy

Hi Stevo,
Congratulations on the Oztent, I started typing this before I read through all the pages and realised you'd already bought it, but I'll leave my comments for future aulroians doing searches
When travelling as a family, a quick set up (and pull down) tent is important, because in reality there is only one person to do anything, either you're unloading and your wife is minding the kids, or she's unpacking and you're minding the kids; and the moment anyone in the family needs a toilet break, all work stops
I looked for a family tent last year and narrowed the choice to the OzTent and the Blackwolf
The Oztent is faster to set up and pull down, but it had the following limitations : weight, length, limited head room (the roof angle backs down too soon)
The Blackwolf (I bought a 300 lite plus) offers 3 x 4'5m of floor space, 2 rooms, high roofs, so that it's easy to get changed, <20kg makes it managable by 1 person on a roof rack, it withstands high winds very well
We did a group purchase with the Blackwolf and bought 4 tents at the same time (4 families reached a consensus) Of the 4 tents, 2 were affected by faults - there were a total of 3 warranty related issues Blackwolf were quick to replace the faulty tent in the first instance (holes), and the faulty replacement in the 2nd instance (stitching), however the third instance was a slightly too big fly on another tent, this wasn't realised until it gathered water on a trip* and they were hesitant to replace it, despite the photos showing it compared to the other tents, eventually they replaced the fly only
* it probably held about 40 litres without leaking - so the materials are pretty good
I'd recommend the Blackwolf, but make sure you set it up and examine it carefully as the quality control isn't as good as the design
Also some Blackwolf bags have a handle on the end, and some don't - mine doesn't, but the end handle makes it so much easier to lower from or raise to a roof rack, so try to get one of those
Att Syntax Police - sorry, but the full stop dot on my keyboard is faulty

Wow Stevo, your setup is identical to mine right down to the same table! :) We got the rv5 with all the fruit and love it.
How do you go loading the RV 5 on to the rhino? its good to know your stood up well at fraser in strong winds, i have used mine on stockton a number of times and had some slight winds but nothing to serious, the last time we did a fraser trip we go hit but some very last winds that nearly took out our campsite, but the tent we had last time wasnt no where near up to the task compared with the RV5.

But seriously :D......no probs. As you can see it all fits well as per pic below on ferry to Fraser....

What I did find interesting that when breaking camp to leave...the winds were still howling. As soon as I started to undo the fly....the tent lifted up....so the fly must play a part in those conditions....also lowering the front awning almost to the ground helped heaps as well. Otherwise no wuckers....even though wind was nailing us from the side at one stage....inside the front section ( ie side and front panels) there was no wind coming in....was quite amazed. Take heaps of pics,

After our uninsured camper burnt to the ground in bushfires we are thinking of getting a RV5 oztent until another camper evolves! Will be getting the foxwing aswell and a few attatchments. This will be earlyish next year (gotta finish house first), was going to see about a group buy. I can get their stuff fairly cheap as my folks use the foxwing on the caravans they build.
I'll be getting the foxwing, RV5 and side walls.
They seem like a really good tent and just love the foxwing for ease of use.

We have a Freedom Northern Tourer. As you know when we go on our yearly trips we camp and move every night. The NT is very quick to setup and pack up. However they are heavy and big.
The turbo tents look good we discounted them because they have more fail points... and as our camping is remote we decided against that option.
The oztent is great and quick. However they are HUUUGE when folded and this does cause problems.
You have an unusual requirement too.. as you may be on your own one trip or with the kids the next.
If it was me... from what I know of your situation... I'd just get a simple and cheap dome tent. Get the biggest one you can with just a couple of poles. Cheap, cheerful, relatively quick to set up, and small when packed.
Either that or a tourer type tent. Maybe there just isn't one right solution to this.. they all have positives and negatives.

Some friends of ours bought an Oztent. I'm not sure what model.. maybe a 4 man. Anyway, they tour with us on our yearly trip. They have a classic rangie and the thing runs from the back window and pokes through into the front seats between them. They have to look at each other over or around the tent! That there is crazy stuff.

First off I have little experience camping in Australia - most of my camping has been done in the norther hemisphere in Europe and Africa.
However, Now Sydney based I am looking to get a new tent and like most have quickly narrowed the choice down to either the Black Wolf Turbo 240, Turbo Lite 240 or the Oz tent RV-3 or 4.
During all my reading no-one mentions condensation and the fact that the Oztents are only single walled. I believe the Black Wolf's have liner and fly.
The question therefore is how much of an issue is condensation? Experience has taught me that double skinned tents are the answer to combatting this problem.
Whilst the BW and Oztents may not leak from the outside, do either produce condensation on the inside over night?
Maybe in Asutralia this isnt a problem?
My camping will range from the desserts of WA to the more mountanous areas outside of Sydney, during all times of the year.
Should this form part of my decision making process of which tent to buy?

G'day Jon,
I posed the same question a couple of years ago, the thread's here (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/camping-tucker-bush-basics/75800-condensation-oztent-other-tents.html).
I think the general consensus is that condensation can occur in the Oztents, but no worse than other tents. Keeping the tent ventilated, and using a fly, can help reduce the condensation.

I tend to get quite bad condensation on my double walled tents and virtually none with my Oztent. I think the canvas breathes and reduces the buildup.

JonHi Jon...I have had my RV5 in all sorts of conditions, summer..winter....dry.......belting down with rain....and little to no issue with condensation. Also the Oztent does have a fly....as per the picture below:

Steveo,
thanks for the pic and feedback.
Slightly different question, but who makes / where did you get the gray box at the side of your tent (beneath the Jerry)? I'm looking for something similar.
Thx

Allan, do you still have it, if so do you want to sell it, Regards Frank.
