After doing a search around for the 5 inch butler lights and being floored by the cost of them ex UK ($850) i found a bloke on ebay Oz selling repro Masey Ferguson 5 inch lights (basically identical) for $35 each. I bought a couple and they certainly look the part. They will do till that lottery win comes in.

I notice the screw rim fixing position is at 90 degrees to the base flange ..on the real 80" thing .. the rim screw is 180 degrees or opposite the main mounting flange . But its Ok for that price .. you cannot complain .
Also , you would have to track down the flat fluted glass lenses ..I've seen these on Epay for ridiculous money too. Your local glazier may help you out ....they can cut round bits for you really cheap.
Looking at the vendors main page ..they have some repro items for Fergy TE20 series tractors e.g., top end gasket sets for $35 ... and engine rebuild kits for a good price too. When is somebody going to wake up and manufacture repro parts for Series 1 Land Rovers .. we are screaming out for engine spares and those other hard to get things . At the moment, a few businesses in the world ( UK mainly ) seem to have the S1 market all to themselves - they probably stocked up on parts 20 years ago when the demand was lower... now they are cashing in .
As I said earlier, there is a huge aftermarket array of parts available for WW2 Jeeps these days .. engine parts are cheap as chips. Why should we pay $600 for four lousy pistons... when others pay 1/3 rd of that .
I'm rambling on..better stop !

I think they are close enough for the price. They will give that S1 its charm back. Good find:)

It perhaps has something to do with the fact that there were around 200,000 Series 1 Landrovers built, in five different wheelbases and with four different engines, compared to around 650,000 WW2 Jeeps, all essentially identical (not including around 10,000 non-standardised versions or postwar Hotchkiss production). This means that theoretically the market should be more than three times as large, without allowing for the fact that there was far more variation in the Landrovers - very few parts are the same between a 1949 80" and a 1958 107 diesel, for example.

Yep im going to pick up a precleaner as well. The lenses on the light are fluted just for others reference. He also has a Ford tractor light that may also work. Take the cheap stuff where we can get it. :p:p:p:p

Hi
Something you may not know
the reflectors in the Butlers are silver coated
the 2 reflectors cost me 3 years ago $140 to get re silvered
as they are sliver coated
I have several spare lights and a 10 or so reflectors, BUT even if you get a pair of original lights you would need the re-silvering.
so good lights are worth a $
cheers

Something to be aware of: the originals have a flat edged rim.. to account for the flat fluted glass lens. Hard to tell from the pics, but the modern repro tractor lights look to have a curved rim edge , where the convex shaped glass meets the rim .
Being picky ... but most of us S1 people seem to be pedants by nature !

To be precise, butler lights were very similar to the original lights and were infact used on military landrovers and various british cars/tractors etc of that era.
They are virtually indectinguishable to the original lights which were LUCAS.
The differences are the rim is round as opposed to square, and the lens actually has "butlers" in the glass.
The original lights were Lucas and there were 2 variations in the lens.
One was fluted with no lucas markings and the other was fluted and had LUCAS in the bottom of the glass. The LUCAS marked lens is vary rare.
The reflectors are silvered and the bulb fitting should be for the twin filament type of bulb.
There was a single filament fitting which was used in tractors.
If you are planning to use your Land Rover at night, and want to see where you are going, the replica headlight is the way to go, as the original lights are a little better than candles.
If on the other hand you want original lights, then you will need to dig deeply in your pockets, as they are quite hard to find
Cheers
Marco
