G'day All,
At the moment all I have is 2 cross bars. Having been out looking at tents, plus was looking to get one anyway....is roof racks to suit the D2. I am interested in pro's/ cons of your particular one....rough price....ease of putting on/ off....or do you just leave it on...max weight it can carry etc. As we have 5 kids...and at any weekend...always 4....am looking to get away more often in 2009. So will need a roof rack for extra space. Also as I have 2 cross bars at the front as per the pic, is there a simple option as well ie crossbars for the back part of the roof..if that makes sense, so if I wanted to tie down a tent and that was all. Also any roof rack additions ie good tie downs....those roof sacks etc...thanks in advance:

I think any decent roof rack would disregard the factory bars.
Maybe you could get a cage/basket thing for the factory bars.
I have heavy duty Rhino bars for mine but I don't have the factory bars or a basket. Just use them for carrying long things like timber for the house.

Gday Stevo,
I've got an ARB Defender 3/4 (1850x1350) rack sitting on Discovery legs.
I like the bar because the aesthetics suit the D2, it is steel, strong, larger than the ARB D2 rack. It is a multi person task taking it on/off, though I can do it by myself by swinging it from the carport roof using ratchet straps and truckies hitches - it is heavy. These days I just leave it on.
They also match with the Discovery rear door ladder

I have a Wind Cheetah from Dolium Pty Ltd (http://www.dolium.com.au), which is the same as the rackmaster sold by Opposite Lock.
Pros are its weight (all aluminium and very light), the leg clamps which lock onto the gutter very solidly, the mounting system which uses sliding bolt in a rail which is easy to adjust and also the fact that they are flat with no side which makes it easy to load. This brand come in 2.2 metre or 1.4 metre size.
Cons - price? Like most roof racks your up for about $1300. Also, if you want one you have to go either through Opposite Lock or Outback 4wd. Neither which set you on fire with service.
The people at Dolium though are very helpful. They sorted mine out when they sent the wrong rack to me a week before my Simpson Trip. They couriered a new one and gave me a tyre holder for free.
The amount of weight you can carry isnt really limited by the rack so much, but more the capacity of the roof. The Disco cant carry a huge weight, so a light rack is really important. The Wind Cheetah is very strong and light. The girlfriend and myself can put it on ourselves.
I have attached a photo...

Hi Steve
I dont think a roofrack is really suitable in your case.
Get yourself a decent trailer with 16" wheels. It will go where the D2 will go plus the kids can throw in stuff like push bikes etc and the Mrs can take the kitchen sink!!!!.You will still fit under low branches on tracks and wont have the danger on too much weight up top.
You will just have to learn how to back it up:p:p:p:p:p(Im sure you posted once that you couldnt reverse a trailer)

Thanks for the replies...I have just been checking out Rhino Racks...any thoughts....thought pretty good as can have roof racks and add a luggage tray....instructional video looked pretty easy..even for a dunce like me :). I hear what ya saying Landy Andy, and on some trips would take the trailer ( and yes you remember correctly :p) for tents, bikes etc. But as I am looking at getting an Oztent and was saying going with just myself and 3 of my children, throwing the tent up on a roof rack would be easier than putting it inside the disco.
Then there is the other scenario...if we have all 5 children together and going away...say to Coffs for a non camping holiday....then would need a roof rack/luggage carrier and bag to put bags etc as would be no room in the disco. So I guess I am trying to cover a couple of different scenario's dependant on who I am going camping/ 4WDing with.
Now speaking of trailers...where could one get a spare rim?? I have taken this to Fraser before I owned it and mangled a wheel very badly....skull dragged it across half of Fraser before realising there was an issue:eek:...long story. Also Slunnie you have a steel rack and Angus a aluminium one...from what the one I am looking at with Rhino, load rating is around 100kg...is that enough?? Appreciate the info here gents :twobeers:

You never really want to put much up on the roof cause the disco already has a slightly higher centre of gravity. I only hever had a single tyre, bedding and the oztent up on the roof rack.
The rack I have is just the right size for the oztent BTW.

Stevo, I would have thought that 100kg would be enough. Well.... it has been for me at least. The stuff that I usually put up top is typically light and bulky, things like swags etc. The exception may be a spare tyre and rim.
I would have thought that the Rhino would be good. I recall being told (by ARB mind you) that steel rigid bars are fine, though the Alumium ones need to be jointed and flexible so that they don't crack - they were recommending ones like the Rhino that allow a bit over movement as the chassis flexs, rather than the rigid alloy ones constructed like the ARB steel bar.
Another option may also be the use of a roof basket. These should be light and slippery through the air. I don't think that I'd put a spare tyre or rooftop tent in it though.

Stevo68,
Another thought is do what i did & fit the factory extended roof rails. U can then buy another cross bar (singular) from roof carrier systems & then fit the rhino cage/aluminium rack. its all not that heavy & when u finish u have the original low roof rails if u want to store the cage/rack.
Just another thought for you to consider;)

As McDisco has already said..the Wind Cheetah Rack from Front Runner is a superb peice of kit with some simple and clever additions.
By using the tie down system you can change the layout of your roof loads every time you go out...it's just soooo simple.
They also make a fantastic range of roof rack extras that bolt-on to the rack using the same 13mm upturned bolt method.
You can have the second spare wheel carrier, jerry can holder, gas bottle holder, driving light brackets, Hi-lift mount, shovel mount, slide-under table rack, rooftent mounts...the list goes on.
Being of aluminium It's also very lightweight compared to steel ones... which can also rust when you eventually scratch the powder coat.

Heres mine, A Genuine Land Rover expedition one,
Pro's, sits high enough to allow BOTH sunroofs to be used, good sized load area, factory item so fits well. Its also in kit form so can be taken apart for easy storage when not in use (I leave it one)
Feet sit over B, C and D pillars at the strongest part of gutters
Somewhere to mount ya roof lights. :p
Cons, Steel so will rust when powder coat comes off. quite heavy, needs 2 to fit it, Not as "pretty" as some out there, but a lot cheaper.

I have the Rhino Rack, it's fine, no wind noise, it's light, attaching things is easy.
I also have the Rhino shovel holder, awning brackets and Hilift jack brackets that i made to attach to with the bracket holders (things that slide in the rail of the bar)

Thanks for the pics and feedback. At this stage looks like Rhino will get the nod as I like the set up of having just the racks or adding/ taking off the luggage carrier part. What would be max length one would have....I was thinking about 2-2.1m long? Also Baz what type of strap etc is holding the whatsamacallit on the side of your rack there. If I get the Oztent, I assume that is similiar as to how one would attach if only using the racks? Thanks,

Stevo - I've got the same set-up as sniegy has described on mine. I find that with the three cross bars, can easily support the rhino cage, and I still have the three cross rails up there when I take the cage off. Has come in handy for collecting lengths of timber / steel etc for house renovations and other projects.

Stevo if you get the Rhinos go for the lower ones and just shave a bit of plastic out of them then space them up. They will sit nice and close to the roofline of the Disco. You can get longer bolts and spacers from Rhino.

I had one of the Land Rover expedition racks also...found it to be excellent apart from not being able to fit a rooftent without modding it.
Another usefull tip with those racks...dip the assembly screws in copper-slip or anti-seize compound when you put it together. The mild steel threaded inserts rust the screws in tightly!

Stevo68, This was my old TD5, under the factory alloy roof rack (which is very flimsy but does the job)at the rear was the extended roof rails. With one extra cross bar u get the full length to carry just about anything & when not in use just looks like the factory rails.
Cheers, hope this helps.;)

For a different approach, I got Rola roof rack cross bars with the 1500mm sports crossbars, as they sit much lower than Rhino. I still get into car parks. I also have the roof rails. The next plan is to add the rail mounted cross bar, so I end up with three cross bars. Rola sports bars claim 40kg a bar, whereas Rhino claim 50kg. The issue is how much weight do you want to put on the roof anyway. The 3 rail set in theroy carries 120kg, but I don't want to carry that weight
I currently carry a Viking kayak. With the 3 cross bar set up I will add the Rhino half cage + kayak, and the third option being the Rhino 760mm wide pod. So I can use the pod + cage on other trips.
You can check this stuff out on the Rhino and Rola web sites.
Works for me.

Hi guys.
I have a series 2 discovery - looking a t racks to hold a second spare and maybe a swag, to take gear out of the car. I don't really want to get one of the big expensive roof cage style racks, but would be interested in the corss bars that can be bought for the factory bars. Does anyone use thse bars? Are they strong enough to hold a tyre (steel rim) and swag? From what I can see, there are a few styles - the factory style (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Land-Rover-Discovery-Roof-Cross-Bars-suit-Roof-Rails-_W0QQitemZ320345229088QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ2009022 8?IMSfp=TL090228148001r6701 (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Land-Rover-Discovery-Roof-Cross-Bars-suit-Roof-Rails-_W0QQitemZ320345229088QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ2009022 8?IMSfp=TL090228148001r6701)) and aftermarket (probably stronger, http://www.thepartsbin.com/sitemap/land_rover~roof_rack~parts.html (http://www.thepartsbin.com/sitemap/land_rover~roof_rack~parts.html)).

Rhino Sports Rack .. Got one on the Front on my bars and 2 Heavy Duty Rhino Racks with spacers bring up the rear. A nice flat Rhino Platform Rack spans all three. Reason I went this way with the lower Rhino Rack with spacers and platform Rack was to keep the height down. TJM, ARB, 4WD specialty shops and even Supercheap and Repco should have these.

Hi could not afford a good full size rack at the moment so I managed to find a fairly solid basket at Super Cheap Auto, $150.00 and fitted that to the origional rails. Had to modify the brackets that came with it slightly but have ended up with a solid place to put the tent and a few other light items.
Under no illusions it will only be used for light stuff . One day when the girlfriend buys me a TIG welder for Xmas I will make a better one.
I do get a small amount of wind noise around 60-70 klm ph but this is drowned out by all the other wind noise at a 100 klm!!
Hope this helps

Hers mine guys.
Steel with mesh floor,TJM I think, looks the same but different sticker(acc shop).
Note my Disco dosn't have the factory rails.
Top bar of front section is the same height as the floor of the rear section so the Oztent fitts by over hanging the front bar.
Gas bottle holder is from a caravan parts shop. Bolted with a Gal. bracket and nylock nuts.(Extended hose on stove so I don't move it)
High-lift jack and shovel holder mounted to drivers side also.
Positive is the size and stength.
Negative is the weight and the ability to over load.

I included a pic I took of a Daintree River snake by accident and left it in when I added other rack picks....I think it goes well with the rack and may consider putting one on the rack, but alas they grow to 20 foot long and 10 inches thick so it might put some people off at the drive thru'.

one per leg but only with the alloy aero bars (the silver ones) - with the HD square profile steel bars (black) you will need 2 I reckon (cause the converter fitting to allow the aero bars to be fitted to the HD legs gives you another 8mm or so in height anyway)

Yep - same here. I had the HD bars on first up and swapped them for aero bars cause of the noise. I used one spacer on the HD bars and they settled way too low...so I was going to go 2 spacers but as per above didnt have to cause of the change of bar. As said above get out your grinder to dress up the HD legs to a nice close fit around raised part of roof. Front one (if you do 3) is fine as is.

Rhino HD bars, as you can see front is on the rails, rear (210 legs with spacers) is on the gutter - they are the same height from the gutter. The front is significantly more stable when full loaded (100kg+ building materials)

Thought I would show my rack.....
Anyway, factory extended roof rails currently with 2 x Thule Aero Bars, I will be buying another set of Thule crossbars and fitting a Rhino Alloy Basket (1500x1010 internal).
I am only wanting the racks for light gear, swags, chairs, ski gear (life jackets etc) so am happy with the rails and alloy basket.
I am also thinking I might get the shorter aero bars so minimise anything hanging out the sides, leaving just enough room for the Foxwing and basket.
BMKal

I like that Rhino alloy basket Chris - might think about something like that for mine.
If you want to really minimise the amount that the cross bars stick out the side, and at the same time reduce the height of your cross bars and basket slightly, Rola make cross bars that clamp between the original Landrover rails and sit at virtually the same height - so that the top of the cross rails is level with the top of the original Landrover rails. I have the Rola rails on mine - but at the back I don't have the extended Landrover rails that you have - mine has a set of tracks mounted on the roof, which carry the third Rola cross rail and a set of tie-down points, all of which can be adjusted for position.
I have just fitted a Black Widow awning, but to do this I installed a pair of Rhino legs level with my front and rear cross bars, with some braces that I made up at home from the top of the Rhino legs onto the Rola rails. The Awning is mounted off the side of the Rhino legs.

My set up is exactly the same as CJTs. I looked at the rola arms suggested by BMKal, but they just dont look as strong as the ones that sit on top.
CJT, if you need to shorten them, I reckon 2 minutes with an angle grinder.

One thing I just found out, the Rhino Alloy Basket does not mount onto the Thule Bars, so I now need to buy Rhino Bars instead.
I will probably end up with 2 sets of racks;
1. Thule with bike carrier and sports gear etc.
2. Rhino Bars with Rhino Alloy Basket and Foxwing etc.

HI
I have found a TJM style rack that drops down at the front, but do I need to remove the curent front rails to fit them. this picks on this thread of the drop down G4 and tjms don't have rails to start with.
How do I remove them and what is the best way to plug the whole? without welding and painting?

Yes you do.... However there is a way around it... If you move the level of the front basket bit to the top of the frame.. then it is actually level front to rear...
Allowing the rails to stay and NO holes which i think is the better way forward..
Then if you need to take the full rack off you can still run 2 cross bars etc..
I would send you a picture but mine (Which i have done as above) is probably goining to be at the grit blasters for another 2 days..
As soon as its back i will post a pic..

Sorry probably my ramblings.....
The factory bars STAY...
The bottom of the front section on the TJM gets moved up to become the base of the top rail...
Hopefully will have a couple of pics to go on this arvo... Might still have a red tinge to it though from the grit...

Yes. Should have done photos but got carried away in the process and just got on and did it!!! It was easy though....
The weld on the inside of the legs was ground off and I dropped the legs (there is leg section inside the formed side of the roof basket leg drop down).
On the second picture (mounted on car) the baskets front edge sits about 1.5 - 2 inches in front of the mounted disco roof bar. I normally run the basket further back....a hairs width away from the disco roof bar as I find thats the best place in regards of reducing the noise.... for what I carry...
Also you can see on the second picture where I zip welded the inner and outer leg again. There is still a section of leg leading from the gutter up behind the formed side of the roof basket drop down and again zip welded on the inside...
Hope this 'explains' it.
Sounds a lot BUT easy as..
I will post some more pics when I get it back from its paint job.

No... When running empty up top it makes no excessive noise but you know its up there... But then the Disco is hardly then quietest brick to push through the air anyway!..
I find all my excessive noise comes from the contents of the car that are using the seatbelts!!!!
My load layout up top is what has caused me noise factor as such... Due to the load I put up there I can't really adjust it much. I may try a wind deflector but I prefer the 'look' of the basket stepped back from the front end... Also stops the window washer juice flowing onto the contents as well..
I have been in a Disco without the bars and a full rack up top and the noise is the same...
Either way you go... There WILL be noise from uptop mounted goodies...

I looked into removing my roof rails in 2002 when i almost picked up an original Safety Devices Disco 2 rack (which were used for the Camel Trophy vehicles) and again recently for a Tradesman Disco 2 steel rack (which they build after you place an order). Both of the racks i looked at have the dipped front.
After checking around the outcome was that almost the entire interior roof had to be removed to unscrew the rails so that you could remove them. You would also need to find a stopper that you could successfully insert into the rail holes ensuring that they are completely waterproof so you don't suddenly have water soaking the interior.
I asked Land Rover if they manufactured or could recommend anything that would do the job and they had no answers.
I look back now and wish that when I bought my D2 i should have got one without rails. Saying that I’m still thinking of pulling the roof apart early next year so I can finally get the rack that I want.

Add mine to that mate - the poverty packs didnt have them. I quite like the clean look and that when the Rhino's are on there is nothing underneath. And I like not having leaks in rain....(like my mates 4 month newer 02 D2a which is leaking around the roof rail grommets!!!).

Hi Guys,
I bought a pair of rhino racks a couple of years ago when I bought my Disco II to get me out of trouble renovating the house. They do sit up pretty high above the roof due to the front bars. I toyed with the idea of removing them and getting the holes welded and respray the entire roof - its got a few deep scratches from the previous owner. The rhino racks are very good bits of kit... I've systematically tried to break them (unintentionally of course) with stupid loads and they handle very well. The boat anchor even drove off in it to pickup the grommets from school with half a dozen 3m lengths of 4x2 that I was about to finish unloading - no tie downs. I think they stayed put due to the racks, not her driving. The anchor isn't known for her mechanical empathy. :p But I digress, I'm happy enough now to not remove the front bars as it gives me something to hold on to when loading the racks. I still wouldn't mind a full length roof rack though. Bars do have their limitations. Maybe another pair?32020

Stevo68, This was my old TD5, under the factory alloy roof rack (which is very flimsy but does the job)at the rear was the extended roof rails. With one extra cross bar u get the full length to carry just about anything & when not in use just looks like the factory rails.

This is why I now have three roof bars and my full length just sits in the shed getting dusty!!! I like to polish the car every now and then to help prevent rust and I got sick of getting friends around to remove it then back another day to put it back on!! I just clamp an old security screen which i have braced onto the bars if a mesh base is needed!

Its good to see this photo again. I remember Sniegy posting it up a few years ago when I first joined the forum. At the time it was everything I wanted my D2 to be/look. Nothing ridiculous in terms of mods, but just a well sorted truck for everything from camping to more challenging stuff. In particular the Sahara bar got my attention, however after a year or two of dreaming,(while doing all the other bits and pieces), I came to the conclusion that getting one second hand was going to be a lottery, and I could never quite justify the cost of a new one. However through all that I did fully investigate the fitting side of it on to an early D2 and it seems that it just bolts on as normal. The only extra work involved is trimming the bottom of the front facia under the headlights and grill.

Gday Stevo,
I've got an ARB Defender 3/4 (1850x1350) rack sitting on Discovery legs.

Hi all,
I am after a roof cage for my Disco 2a and was hoping to get something similar to Slunnie's setup (except alloy).
I have found a site on ebay that sells these and I believe they can supply mounting brackets that are tall enough.

My only concern is whether the rack will be wide enough. Slunnie's is 1350 wide and this is only 1250. Anyone got any advice?
I have a fairly large canoe that we take camping and so I need a roof cage because I could chuck bulky stuff in the cage and then throw the canoe on top.
As a last resort I am also considering getting 3 HD gutter mount rhino racks and fixing this cage to the top. This would sit higher than I would like though (as well as costing more).

Hi Mick,
Both are bad ideas unfortunately.
The 1250 won't be wide enough to attach legs to.
Attaching it to Rhino HD bars or similar, will be a nightmare, and not very stable either.

Any suggestions?
I'm going to be using it to carry a tent, table, chairs, etc as well as the canoe. The canoe is quite wide (97cm at its widest) so it will need to sit on top. The canoe is also 4.4m long, so the rack cant be shorter than about 1.6m (from front to back top bar).

You could also look at the Hannibal racks. These are all alloy and at 30kgs all up for the 1.8mtr it's a beauty ! I've climbed up there many times and it's way sturdy. It's the easiest way to wash the roof of the disco and has an almost endless way to configure mounting points. Worth the the few extra pennies.

Hey discotek,
I bought one of those same roof racks although I think mine might be a bit shorter. The product is identical to Rhino products just a different sticker, the only problem I had was the cross bars were too short for my liking as they were only half sitting on the legs, so I ordered some rhino cross bars and used the cheap legs, all works great.

Also can the mounts for the cross bars be moved nearer each end?

My rack. 3 x heavy duty crossbars with a basket from my other vehicle with its mounts cut off. Its a little narrow but I have my high lift and shovel on the side which makes up the shortfall and my rod holder on the other side. I still have some modifying I want to do as in getting it down a little lower, making a wind deflector on the front and cutting the mesh off the sides as its just weight I dont need.

Thanks Sharkee. It's one of the voyager racks ones from the US. I bought it at Peninsula Rangie in Melbourne.
It's pretty light but seems strong enough. I'm 86kg and happy to walk on one bar. Only issues have been having to retighten in with a load on going over severe bumps (eg floodway on Oodnadatta that you didn't see...) there'd be a bang as the rack hadn't been pulled completely flush (gap of maybe 1mm on one peg per side) to the roof mount and would flex slightly. After some trial and error I got it flexed and tightened flush to the gutters.
Empty there's a light amount of wind noise, I didn't run it long enough to know the fuel burn difference though.
Little bits of the powder coating wore off where I had a log tied on top for firewood on the Tanami corrugations. I bought some inch wide clear tubing to put under tied down metal loads (high lift jack) etc.
I'm happy with it all up. Was $1100.

Whoops, Looks like I have put this in the wrong thread. It was meant to be in the show us your D2 thread. Sometimes I should just go to bed instead of late night posting.
I can not edit the first post.
Can the Mods please delete

If the Mods could move the original it would be good.
Or you better get a roofrack;-)

Yes I have the TJM drop down at the front rack off a D1 sitting on the D2 I'm wrecking to see how it looks. It's a pretty good fit. I only needed to put a slight bend in the middle bar to allow it to go back far enough over the rise bit. Next step it to fit it to my car.
I'll post a picture when fitted.

If you plan to offroad seriously - cross them off your list they bend if landed on and can stop the door from opening...
Look into proper slider steps... ;)

Hello all,
I'm looking at a roof basket off a 1994 Discovery one. It has leg mounts, is anyone sure if it will fit a 2001?
