View Full Version : Help with choosing D1 update tyre size

Hopefully there are a few night owls on here tonight as I need to buy tyres tomorrow.

I have a stock '95 D1 update ES and have just picked up a set of 16 x 8 Pro Comp rock crawler rims with 4.25" backspacing. I'm unsure of the offset (+/- 6mm) as I admittedly don't really know how to measure it. Backspacing I knew how to measure.

I want to fit the biggest tyres I can (obviously) without a suspension lift. However, if need be, I will purchase and install 30-50mm coil spacers if that will allow me bigger tyres. The only reason I'm not doing a suspension lift right now is money constraints.

From what I understand, 245/70/r16 tyres are possible with no other modifications. I was hoping to go to a 265/70/r16 and from what I've read, this would be possible with a 30mm coil spacer.

If anyone could confirm or deny anything I've mentioned above, or provide any additional advice, I'd be very happy.

Coil spacers are Bad.......makes it possible to bind up springs resulting in lack of control and possible chassis damage.

I dont know what the back space is on normal rims but if the rims sit equal with the guards when on then tyres are going to be outside the guards meaning that on compression you will make a mess of your guards.

If you think it would be cheaper to fit tyres now rather than suspention then you are going to be in for a world of financial pain when you go through these problems.

I suggest you sit back and think about a whole package and not take short cuts as the short cuts will cost you big time.

Thanks for the tip. Did some reading and I should be fine with 245/70 or 245/75 16's.

Coil spacers are Bad.......makes it possible to bind up springs resulting in lack of control and possible chassis damage.


I mite be lucky then.

Coil spacers
I've had 1' on the front with 1.5' on the rear, for four years, with no problems,
Also 2' on ea King Spring, 2' lower top rear shock mount. std shocks.

Thanks for that reply mate. All you hear about coil spacers is bad publicity but with the amount of people out there who are running them, I'm sure they can't be all that bad. Plus, I'm not out there doing the toughest of trails. I don't expect they'll be an issue for me. If they turn out to be, then you live and learn I guess.

Coils are cheap, if cost is an issue move your rear springs to the front and get new 2" lifted rears and away you go- 265/75/16's are great ;).

just remembered. :o

To much lift for STD Tail shalfts.
I needed to up grade the front tail shalft, to a D2
new uni in the rear evey 8 months.

You would proberly get away with spacers, only, with STD springs.
BUT I have got 2' on the springs as well.
