View Full Version : Action 4WD Monthly

Guys, latest 4WD Action Monthly has just arrived at my door. This used to be Australian 4WD monthly. Love the mag and look forward to it. I presume we all remember the last time they tested a d3 and it stopped after going thru a river. Not a great day. This issue they tested 5 trucks for their ultimate aussie touring 4WD. Well guess who came back from the dead to win it. Yep, the best 4X4XFar. Incidently the writer did mention the previous effort by the d3 and that they were not just being nice this time, on the contrary, they tried their best to beat it up and make it fail.
Unfortunately the Defender came last, but this was due to its lack of comfort for touring, while it excelled in the rough stuff. The D3 however was the complete package, pipping the LC200 into second place.
If anyone would like i can scan the article.

Geez Boxer, is the only thing you guys from Aus 4Wd action do is trawl 4wd forums? There is squik (Serika) and 4130 warrior (brendon) on outerlimits and now you too. :p

Funnily enough though, I came here first and foremost to meet other Disco owners :)
And the best bit about that is the "hey I'm having an issue with my car" bit , cause 9.9999 times out of ten, several other owners have done this before and have the info.

What a load of hogwash - we drove ours 16,000km around Oz and I have never driven a more comfortable vehicle - and I used to use Patrols/Cruisers in the same environment for work.
I'm 6'2" - I reckon you've got to be a sook to find a Defender so uncomfortable. Or are they fat arses? :p

The comments were about the suspension more than the seating (though they did comment on the handbrake still poking into the left leg.) They had a few dislikes, but the article is far too brief, and I haven't checked the DVD to see if it has more useful info. The only real criticism of the Disco 3 is that the dealer network is limited.

Hi Pedro,
My membership here as posted is purely due to the fact that I own a 1996 V8i Disco and am a very happy Landrover owner. As far as the magazine goes, well, I don't own it, I work here. If anything would have thought that my non offensive post would have been welcomed by Landrover owners who like to see more great British 4WDs in the pages. Feel free to pull it down if you feel otherwise. And you you have a problem with the way I've responded here, please don't hesitate calling me on (02) 9741 3869 or 0415 936 558

Thanks for the honest reply Mark.
and in the same vein,,
there have already been a couple of our members in your mag, and while happy with the pics, not so with the editing of their words, meaning all references to this site were,, mislaid?
AULRO is at the forefront of presenting "Happy Land Rover Ownership" to the general Australian (world?) public and would seriously consider any reasonable collaboration.

Thanks for that Pedro, really I'm not too sure about past experiences, this is my second stint with the company having worked on their performance magazines before and now they asked me to return in September to work on the 4WD DVD. As far as I can see, we're always up for new ideas cars and tagging along on trips. I'm definitely not here to market the magazine in any way, but I guess the positive is, that if you consider me to be "one of the crew" on AULRO, then you effectively have a "man on the inside" :)
So.... who's for a Stockton run?

There are plenty of other members here involved in professional endeavers that benefit from this site, or work somewhere that does.
Mark was not advertising or fishing for clients.
You are not going to stop anybody from a magazine looking through the site for features for their publications if that is what they want to do because you don't even need to be a member.
In fact, by stating where he works, he is MORE likely to be harrassed by us when anything in the mag is published that someone doesn't like.
Some people WANT to have their ride published. Xavie didn't, Tolinja did. Same car . Same Mag. At least we MAY have a point of contact now to get our side of the story too.
I'm pretty sure being a magazine they have commercial interests as they are a business, and the business of business is making money. Advertising us makes no money. In fact we have more to gain from them then they have from us.
I would be happy if ANY of my trip reports were run as articles, but I do it for the enjoyment of the people on this site.
And getting back to the Original Reason for the thread.
No way should the fender be last. If they had of tested a 130 there would have been no contest:p

In terms of the "issue" shouldnt that be taken up with some one in that area, not some bloke who works there and is on here cause he drives a Disco....P.S. Welcome Boxer :).
Also can't see how one can say the free use of the site to help professioal ventures is not tolerated then complain when said professional venture may/ may not mention AULRO...but if you do..its A Ok . Seriously bit heavy handed with the approach there ,

No offence to Boxer because I don't think advertising was his intention.
But -
I think this works both ways.
AULRO isn't in it for the money, but it's the advertising dollars and subscriptions, and Inc's deep pockets and hours of toil that keep us going.
Hmm, just like a magazine.
If a representative from a magazine comes in and makes a post that looks like advertising I think it's quite fair to either ask for the advertising to be paid for, or that some form of reciprocal arrangement be found.

However in this case Boxer wasnt advertising, else I would too agree (in fact I sent Inc a PM not so long ago about the rules of advertising on the site and he was very helpfull). that Mark or anyone else for that matter needs to do the right thing.

Simon So are you saying that only applies to someone who works for a magazine that happens to be in 4WDing or anyone. If someone asks a finance quesiton on the forum and I say Im a finance broker would that apply? Or I know a recent get together was held at a pizza place that someone from here organised with other AULRO members...does that apply?
We have a few people from different mags who drive LR's and are members here, is this how we go about welcoming them? I hope not as not much of a template.......I understand the sentiment...but there are better ways to go about things.

I am well aware of what keeps this site operational. I pay my subscription well above what I need to, I purchase merchandise and raffle tickets to help, and also do things to bring an interest to the site so we may get more advertising to pay for things as we then will have a bigger user base and exposure.
It is just unreasonable to expect a commercial entity to basically charitably advertise us when there is nothing in it for them, or possibly a conflict of interest with their paying sponsers.
On your own analogy it would be perfectly reasonable for them to ask us to pay for advertising OUR site.
We are not for profit, and there is a HUGE difference between that and a commercial interest. Most people who have only worked for wages and not run a business still can't seem to get their head around this.
If a representative from a magazine comes in and makes a post that looks like advertising I think it's quite fair to either ask for the advertising to be paid for, or that some form of reciprocal arrangement be found.

The guy just works there. Should we ask everyone that states where they actually work for a contribution even though they have no say in the operation of the business.
I am all for reciprocal arrangements and creating mutual benefits, but where does someone stop being a person who works somewhere and become a member of here. All you are doing then is driving away someone who joined because he bought a land rover and wants to talk about it.

Welcome Boxer!
Again, no offence intended at the intentions of your post.:p
I dunno, Stevo. I think a certain part of it is a matter of conscience. I'd rather pass the business along to a forum member than not. I'd also like to think that if the forum member was making a significant profit due to referrals from the forum they'd put it back.
The difference here is that Boxer did mention his affiliation with the magazine. Most don't, it's not quite an AA meeting, 'Hi, my name's Simon and I'm a Landy tragic,' but not far off.:D
I think it is easy in this sense for a magazine. It's at the newsagent for a fixed price, you pay the money and get the mag.
AULRO is a demographic on a plate for a magazine. I suspect it's a little galling for Inc. to see someone getting free advertising on the back of his time and effort at no cost. When it is a magazine there is also that feeling that we are competing for the same dollar - AULRO members spending their money on a subscription to a mag or subscription to AULRO.
And on the top of all of that is the sheer boring work of chasing this stuff. I think AULRO is pretty relaxed about advertising and General Chat non Land Rover stuff, and it makes AULRO what it is. My wife frequents forums where you are not allowed any posts that are not core to the theme of the forum, and where you aren't allowed to mention any product by name.

Again, I dunno.
I used to run a cafe, many years ago. People would come in all the time and want to stick up ads or promotional stuff for bands or films, or whatever. Usually it was fine. I think if someone from another cafe nearby came in and wanted to put up ads I would have said no.
I think everyone is happy to have Boxer as a member, and lucky him that he gets paid to muck about with four wheel drives all day, and I'm sure we'd like to hear about it.

Thanks guys, I can see all valid points and really, one you all could take on board is that when there's talk of revenue, money etc etc, I could post blantant things on forums all day long (but I won't) and it wouldn't effect my salary one bit. I guess by offering what I did it was more about people having their cars in print and on DVD to show off their hard work. I know for a fact that having my motorbike on the cover of Two Wheels magazine was a huge thrill for me :)

Geez Simon,
Stevo Hat on :D....seriously folks its not me :p
Reckon you are drawing some looooong bows there. I see no difference to me saying Im a finance broker, or someone saying Im a plasterer, or mechanic or working for a magazine. Nor do I see competing dollars for a 4WD mag or a subscription here....in fact I doubt that would even cross anyones mind. That logic could apply to spending $$ here or finding out a member has a CD for sale, or is a plasterer and you now spend those $$ there. People pay for things here for a love of the place and an appreciation of the work done, not cause they are flipping a coin over a donation here or buying a magazine.
I think the point has run away a smidge.....my issue and seems the majority that have posted was A) not a great way to welcome someone...no matter where they were from. B) If there is an issue of being smited...deal with that direct. C) Consensus seems to be that there is no issue from the folks that count...the members. Without the members....this is just a website.

Nope... It's my D1 with a full Adobe Photoshop suspension package fitted. The actual monster truck is at a place called Cadrona Adventure Park just outside of Queenstown NZ. I'd just proposed to my girl and as a present to myself for getting the balls to do it, I bought myself a drive in a monster truck :)
Will post up a photo when I get onto my laptop.
Although it was slow, very badly maintained and had less power than my Disco, I can at least tell my grandkids "I've driven a monster truck" :D
Well Boxboy you kept that secret (about the proposal), well done dude. And I still think you dont have the nackers cos your stunt riding is more like a 7yo girls style :p :p :p :p
However, I do like the idea of rewarding yourself for your courage... must try this sometime :D
