I can get you a digital Tac and sender for $271 plus postage. It is pulsed by a transducer on an injector line. No cutting, clamp on. Small, will fit on the dash.

After having a TD5 fitted into my S1 disco I fitted a VTO tacho off the alt. it is fairly accurate, within a couple of revs.

Why couldn't you use the original tacho?
It would have been alternator driven.

Because they don't come with a tacho:p

Standard V8 Tacho would not have read correctly with a TD5; however i am open to any solutions people may have as to how I can get my standard dash tacho to read correctly.

The standard dash tacho on rangies is driven from the alternator, so the engine that's fitted shouldn't matter in the slightest. Drive it from a TD5 alternator and it should work although pulley size differences could give you an error. Mates with V8 RRC's have found 10% or so difference in tacho readings after an alternator swap.
Failing that. My tacho had already been butchered to work on DC, I made up a little frequency-voltage converter. It's quite simple to make, I bought a little chip and hooked up about 6 wires with a resistor and trimpot to tune it.

There's no point trying to fit a disco tacho to a county, the disco info was for the benefit of the disco and rangie owners reading this thread.
For the county a standard 52mm gauge driven off the alt would make the most sense.

I second that - probably the simplest way if you already have the pulse wire installed

Guys im still looking, seems that the standard 52mm tachos are becoming extinct. i would like some thing that will sit beside the speedo on my extended pod and look like it belongs there.

For a 52mm tacho, you can try E-bay. Although they seem to be alot of "no-brand" chinese units.
For my Rangie, I ended up going with the VDO. Looks about similar to the smiths gauges. Not cheap, though.

VDO still do a 52mm tacho - here's one:
https://www.europaspares.com/prod.asp?product_idx=5003&imgstate=0
The picture shows the 0-7000 RPM one, but it's also available with a 0-6000 RPM range more suited to a diesel than the 0-7K or 0-8K ranges.
Here's a cheaper 52mm tacho that is available with a 0-4000rpm scale:

How much for the transducer by it self?

I got a genuine Isuzu tacho. from Zenith Engineering in Brisbane. They are the Isuzu industrial engine dealers. This works off the injection pump. You unscrew one of the four bungs underneath the pump and replace the bung with supplied sensor.

Dash by the look of it. my dash binnacle is shot and its $110 for a new one, though im not sure if thats a county one or a defender one. i am making up a binnacle that will have a higher top more like a S3 and wider to the left. i will have the tacho and the 3 ARB switches on the left of the speedo.

It is a bare instrument that can go into an appropriate hole in the dash, or fits into one of those dash top housings. I used a Smiths housing from the 1970's that had been gathering dust for twenty years in my shed.

Okay
Thanks C and B :)
Thinking of best way to fit one to the 86 Isuzu County.
I have one in the Stage One that is screwed on top of the binnacle out to the RHS.
Are mods to the alternator required to make one work?

The genuine Isuzu tachometer is not connected to the alternator. It works by counting revolutions of the injector pump camshaft.

slightly OT, but check out THIS (http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/17114/MTC5458-DASH-FACIA-RHD.html?page=13&search=rhd&page=13) (much less that $110!)
Also, these are the same guys that do eshocks.com.... HERE (http://www.egauges.com/vdo_mult.asp?Type=Tachometer&Series=Vision&Units=E)
