Defender in latest 4WD Action (Monthly) mag

Hiya landie lovers,

Having just read this months 4WD Action mag and their test over 5 different terrains, they said the Defender handled really badly (bordering on dangerous) over corrugations, dirt raods etc, but was tops over the rocky stuff.

Is the suspension that badly set up over dirt roads? Is it the case of a set of aftermarket suspension solving the issue?

FWIW, the Disco 3 took the gong for best tourer.

Having travelled on a few dirt roads in my 110 I'd have to totally dissagree with their comments. It actually felt very stable and I had to watch my speed as it would creep up quite quickly. Perhaps as werdan said, it didn't have enough of a "load"??
Got to love their comments on the D3 though, "yeah it's the best, but it would have to be trucked to LR to get fixed if it broke". This may be true, but how many regonal mechanics can fix a 200 series cruiser with out all the diagnostic gear????

Anything with an auto and is broken will need to be trucked. I don't see the point??

Guess they're just trying to find any excuse, no matter now weak, to make it look bad.

The standard shocks are not the greatest shocks the world has ever seen and yes a set of aftermarket shocks will make it a lot better. Having said that try one of the new V8 70's rear track is 100mm narrower than front, now that makes for some "interesting" handling.

They can be pretty ordinary if tyre pressure isn't matched to load. I haven't looked at the article but my guess is that they were running excess pressure.
