Gday
Took my landy down to JC the other day. I never noticed it before, but he opened the door and gave it a shove. There is a huge amount of slop in the hinges. Only on the passenger side though.
(Possible cause: not being used much in 13 years, and rusting shut then being worked free. JC's explanation)
So, I remember once seeing stainless hinges to suit a Defender. Does anyone know anything about these? Otherwise Ill just get a standard set
And yes I know, nice shiny hinges will add a bit to the **** factor :o :p
Thanks

Have a search through the UK based suppliers and eBay. Their reasonably available but the cost a fair bit.

As Brian said, Stig fasteners in the UK. Who I got my ss bolts from. Really good to del with, sent me 8 wrong length bolts and got me the right size out here very quickly, with no issues.

There's also a store on eBay selling stainless fasteners for Land Rovers. See below for 5 door hinge bolt set.

what are the galvanic corrosion issues with stainless steel and aluminium ??
(can you tell I've never had anything to do with boats :D )

In boating, all stainless steel fittings that may come in contact with aluminium alloys must be insulated from them - if you look at any fittings designed for fastening to masts, for example, they will come with nylon insulation washers and gaskets.
The situation is not much worse than for mild steel in theory, but is worse in practice, because mild steel is usually fairly well isolated electrically by paint, where stainless is not.
In the case of door hinges, fastened with stainless bolts, the hinge should be insulated from the door skin by an insulating gasket, and the bolts through the door should have an insulating tube in way of the door skin. Not that much worry about the door pillar, as this is mild steel, although a similar insulating gasket would reduce the likliehood of corrosion.

further to this they don't want to deal with anyone in the west, as the bloke at rovercraft has stitched it up apparently and if you want parts from them you have to go through him over here with his juicy mark up....sad as they are bringing out recessed defender interior door panels

And apart from the fact that colin has gone bust so they are not bringing out anything

Thanks for the replies fellas
I sent Scorpion an email, apparently they dont make them anymore. Not sure how keen I am on the idea of alloy hinges. So I might just end up getting a set of bog standard ones :(
But Ill keep an eye out
Those stainless bolts look the bees knees. I saw that corrosion was mentioned further up. What if you were to smother them in Duralec? Its an anti corrosion thing for use between two different metals; designed for use on boats.

Just having a look at the Stainless bolt kits on the Stig's website
Stig's Stainless Fasteners (http://www.a2stainless.co.uk/)
It says to suit Defenders 1998 on, did they change the threads or do they just have there info mixed up?
Also am I better off getting Hex head or TORX?
Thanks

I had the same problem, with hinge bolts (normal old black ones) being sent over from the UK being to short.
So I gave my local bolt shop a go with a sample. He apologised for only having them in only in SS. Excellent. Also got the bonnet hinge bolts from them in SS to.
That was Bolt Master in Penrith, but was about 5yrs ago. Worth a go.
