My name is Paul and I'm addicted to Land Rovers. :D

I recently imported an '83 LR110 with a 4BD1T & LT95 into the US, sourced from the UK. Initially it was bloody fantastic, but recently it has been blowing quite a bit of white smoke for about 2-3 miles and then it seems to clear up a bit. I live on the top of a hill so the first .75 mi is downhill. Additionally the power is down a bit. I thought that the white smoke and low power could be due to a plugged fuel filter. I changed the one on the engine, but I have not found a pre-filter/water separator. I have traced the fuel line from the IP along the frame rail to the tank and I have not found a pre-filter!? Is there a filter within the IP? Tonight I'll double check to make sure that all the air is bled out of the IP. Any other ideas?

There should be a water separator on the outside of the chassis, just in front of the attachment of the rear suspension RH lower link.

However, the history of the vehicle could show where the missing separator is. The Isuzu engine was never fitted anywhere except Australia, and even here the turbo version was only fitted to the 6 x 6, although there have been quite a few conversions.

My guess is that the vehicle you have is an aftermarket conversion of a V8, and as there was no separator on the original engine, there is not one on the diesel.

To me the white smoke suggests water getting into the combustion chamber, although it could be unburnt fuel.

There is a strainer in the banjo where the fuel comes into the bottom of the injection pump, but while blockage of this would cause poor performance, it would not explain the white smoke.

Yes, it was a conversion job (1989 with a US spec engine).

I've checked the location specified for the water separator, no luck. Do you think that Racor 215R10 pre-filter/water separator would be a good addition? I'll look into the banjo-bolt strainer. Thanks.

I am not familiar with that water separator, but I doubt it is at all critical as to type, as long as it has adequate capacity with minimal restriction. The original one fitted was CAV.

The attached diagram may be useful, from the owner's handbook.

Update: I have plumbed in a Racor pre-filter/water separator and cleaned the strainer at the banjo fitting which had some crud in it. So, there is a new pre-filter, main filter, air filter and a clean strainer.

We are having a bit of coolish weather at the moment(6F/-14C). It starts fine, but is blowing quite a bit of white smoke that has a rather strong fuel smell. Any other ideas?

Sounds like the white smoke is unburnt fuel. There are normally two reasons for this - incorrect injection timing, or dribbling injectors. The manual I have lists static injection timing as 10degrees BTDC for the turbo version.

LOL - 14 and your are asking Aussies.

White smoke, Yes I would suspect its a temp problem that disappears when the motor worms up. Just fuel not being burnt

Check but its common in colder climates to have the pre heaters still on but at a lower voltage for a few minutes after the motor has been started.
but i would suspect that this hasint been set up installed etc
