Has anybody thought of fitting free wheeling hubs to a Disco?

I'm not trying to re-engineer Solihulls work, just thinking out loud. (insert opening can of beer sound effect here) I love the way the Disco is set up but sat here on the porch looking at the truck got me thinking

so....in theory:
Would the free'd up front end return better consumption?
Would additional (or rather more constant) load to rear end wear it out prematurely?
Would the savings from the front end be eaten up by the rear end rebuild?

Now don't get too carried away with your answers, remember we're just talking over a few beers!!

so....in theory:
Would the free'd up front end return better consumption?Hardly any difference if any

Would additional (or rather more constant) load to rear end wear it out prematurely?Yes deffinately, the rover diff was built to take half the power not all of it
Would the savings from the front end be eaten up by the rear end rebuild?yes plus what it would cost to do the conversion, adding FW hubs as well as adding a spool to the transfer case

Now don't get too carried away with your answers, remember we're just talking over a few beers!!

Go back to your beers - there are far too many disadvantages over the few theoretical benefits, that don't equate to actual benefits.

See: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/67465-part-time-4wd.html#post854161 for discussion on the same subject.
