I am in Victoria and recently bought a series 3 SWB rolling chassis and boxes of parts unfortunatly there is no VIN plate. From the serial numbers it appears that the car is around 1978-1982. I wish to register the car has anyone dealt with Vic Roads regarding registering a car without a VIN plate. The shorty is a diesel so finding a similar car as a donour or to use mine as a donour is proving fruitless so far. I am informed that the cars numbers are match an the whole drive chain from the wheel nuts to the motor are all suppose to have been rebuilt, so am reluctant to use it as a donor. Can anyone help with advise.
Kindest regards

the vehicle's chassis number should be stamped on the left hand side, rear spring hanger on the rear axle. it may be that the vehicle predated vin numbers.

If the chassis number is readable on the chassis, I suspect youwill have no problems - give them a call and find out. As Phoenix says, it is possible that it predates compliance plates - they came in some time in the seventies.

I registered my 1969 2A 109 ute about 6 years ago, and it did'nt have a compliance plate attached. Vic roads at that time were happy enough with the chassis number.
Give Vic roads a call and see what they have to say.

If it is an Australian series 3 it will have had a compliance plate - compliance plates came in just before the series 3 was released.
Clearly there must be a process for getting a new compliance plate or else a lot of crashed cars that have not been written off and had their compliance plates smashed up would not be able to be re-registered.

Being a pedant..... it's not a VIN plate - that term didn't start until later in Oz. It would be a Compliance Plate.
