I always wire 2 way radios direct to the battery, Dont know if its right or wrong but the way I figure it is there is less chance for interference from other electrical systems.
also welcome to the forum

Welcome to AULRO :)

If you have one battery and want the radio to only come on when the other accessories are switched on your best bet is to wire it in with a relay.

10A fused wire from the battery to pole #30 for power.
Ground on pole #85
Activation wire from your accessories on pole #86
And feed power to the unit on pole #87

Even better is to come off a second battery and just run a 10A fused line straight off it, since it doesn't matter if you accidentally leave it switched on.

If you hook a radio direct to a battery you are better of to fit a relay and either hook it to an ignition switch or have a separate switch on the dash somewhere as off isn't off on most new radios an if the vehicle sits around like mine dose as work supplies me a vehicle they will drain you battery. Also don't hook the earth to the battery hook it to a good earth point on the vehicle. If you hook direct to the battery and for some reason you end up with an earthing problem to the battery from you chassis/body current will flow through the negative lead through the radio to your antenna instead of the earth lead. ( The antenna should be earthed as well ) It can also happen if an isolator switch if fitted to the earth lead between the battery and chassis ( this usually destroys the radio and melts the coax )

dont know why people want to complicate an easy sysytem, whats wrong with the on/off switch on the radio. (you should only ever forget to swtch it off once)
