Funny noise in dash

In the last few weeks either my hearing is getting better or the noise eminating from behind the dash of my 94 Disco is getting more prominant.

It sounds like water gargling or moving and surging in pipes!

Any thoughts, I never thought there would be pipes in there.

Must be something or early on set of mad cow disease perhaps.

I have been told this is due to an airlock in the coolant (head and radiator) My 96 disco has had this issue for ages. I have tried to get rid of the air by having the radiator uphill (or on ramps) while I have the cap off the radiator tank and the heater on but no success. not sure if it really is a serious problem other than the noise. (A mechanic has suggested it will cause local hot spots in the heads and may led to gasket failure) .. again not sure if so.

Been there had that:mad: It WILL be a leaking head gasket. Get it sorted quick or you will be in for a new head. :twisted: Like I said, been there got that T shirt.
Oh, and ya need to real carefull bleeding them too to make sure ya get all the air out. :cool: If you haven't had the 'P' gasket and cam belt done, do it all together.

Yeah Frank - what NZOliver said.

I had it in my 300Tdi Disco and ignored it for about a month. Then the heater wouldn't heat properly (tepid air coming out on full heat). Then my head gasket was blown. It sounds like a sloshing sound under the dash.

Temp gauge never went into the red, but it got too hot at some stage because the head needed machining.

Its a V8, how is that noise heard in the cabin???

I rather just think its little mice running a muck.


The noise has now stopped, I use no fluid.
I am hoping I can leave this till after Xmas to further investigate.

i have the same noise...............................might explain why im losing coolant and the rising temp even though the viscous fan is stuffed

I had this in my V8. Tried everything to bleed the coolant system. Everyone basically said the same thing, airlock after getting the radiator rodded.
I actually pulled my heads and did the gaskets as I had an overheating issue before the sound began. So it was happening with new head gaskets.
I have found that this noise has stopped now, and even though I always had water draining from my aircon drains, there's a LOT more now. The driveway now looks more like it does under our new Jeep after running the aircon in that.
Whak a screwdriver or something up the drains.
Don't ignore the warnings though. I wasn't losing any coolant, and she wasn't getting hot at all.

Well, its sorted now.
Put car into Natrad radiators, swapped faulty pressure tank cap, thermostate, and slightly leaking end caps on radiator.

Flushed and pressure tested.

No more little mice.
Cost a bit but for peace of mind, its worth it.
