I write this more so I don't forget. Comments welcome.

Roof racks first. Here are the details:

Max roof weight 75kg - dynamic. For comparison Defender 75kg, D3 75kg, Terracan 34kg, Patrol 200kg, LC100 Cruiser 200kg. Although Cruiser and Patrol can take 200kg like others this is included in the payload.

Rola make bars that fit to the standard mounting points. Max limit 60kg - rack weight approx 7kg = 53kg. Accessories available for bars can fit shovels, lights, tie downs etc. Approx $320.

Thule make clamp down bars that go over the sill so kind of ugly. Max 60kg rack weight 7kg = 53kg. No accessories can be fitted. Approx $320.

Rhino are looking into it.

Factory rails and cross bars. LR can not tell me if they support the 75kg weight limit. Approx $1000, $600 for rails, $400 for crossbars. Good if you want to look like you carry stuff :/

Frontrunner aluminium rack 22kg. No official figures but should be strong enough to support full 75kg roof limit so 53kg. Mounts to factory rails. Many options, shovel, jack, jerry, gas, kitchen table, etc. Most expensive option. Opposite Lock are distributors. Guessing price at $1200.

I don't think LR use the same criteria as Toyota/NIssan to quote the max roof weight. AFAIK, the 75 kg is the max load without a roofrack, or with a LR roofrack. We routinely load way more than this (spare tyres, jerrys, luggage etc) on Defenders and D3s equipped with African Outback or Frontrunner racks. I sleep in my rooftop tent on a D3, and the complete tent itself weighs almost 70kg. Not sure if the FL2 is the same though.

Rhino and Frontrunner make good stuff, but shop around for a better price.

OZTent is 2 metres long, so has to go on the roof. Sure I could get another tent but I'll trade length with speed of setup. Fuel, water, another spare it all has to go somewhere and the FL2 is not a big vehicle. Believe me I'm not taking any more than I have to.

What about a trailer?

You don't _have_ to have a roof tent... You _want_ a roof tent, coz it's convenient.

Like wise, you don't _have_ to take a second, complete spare... Take a tyre, repair kit & learn how to use it. You can then pack things in & around the tyre.

If you stop & think through what you're taking, you'll be amazed at what you can leave behind. Pack light & your car will thank you for it. The weight limits are there for a reason. ;)

Its just a long tent that sets up quickly

Yes the Oztent goes up quick but is 2 metres long. It weighs 18kg so reasonably light especially when compared to a roof top tent which are around 50kg and up.

With the 2nd spare my thoughts were to not take a rim so again save weight. I'll get a dual fuel stove so no need for LPG. The biggest weight items are water and fuel but depending on the destination it may not be required. Even with 75kg of water and an extra 40kg of diesel my setup looks to be around the 420kg mark including passengers well below the maximum payload for this vehicle.

Any other areas I could cut? I really do want to get it as light as possible.

I have a good off road trailer but it requires more fuel, extra in ferry costs, more to go wrong and plus it would give me the luxury of taking stuff I really don't want to take.

How many passengers? How extreme do you want to be??

Do you need all of the seats? Carpets?
Tools. Do you need all of them?
Personal camping gear? Do you need all those changes of clothing??
Wash kit... Cut half the handle off your toothbrush!! Use a travel towel?

Ahhh... I see. :D

Yep, even I'd probably stick a couple of roof rails on to carry that...

I picked up a Front Runner rack on the weekend. Nice bit of kit. I can now overload my vehicle like all the Patrol owners. :p

$1275 and a few hours fitting by me. The rack is very solid, I can see why Front Runner have such a good reputation. A lot of accessories too, axe holders, jerry can holders, tie down bolts, light mounts and a camp table that slides underneath the rack.
