Hands free phone mod

G'day guys,

The 99 Rangie I have just bought has an in car hard wired kit for a Nokia 6110 mobile phone - at least its a Nokia and we think its a 6110. Is it possible to retain the setup and change the cradle for a different mobile phone? In my case a Palm Treo?

Perhaps this would be a question for Ron Beckett - he of the shiraz fuelled electronic wizardry! :D

This should be possible if you can work out the pin coding for the existing Nokia plug cut it off and wire that to a plug for your palm )if you can source one. Alternative go bluetooth (from $40).

Hey Willem

If you want to experiment before splicing wires on your 6110 car kit, you can have the one I ripped out of my P38A a few years ago... as long as I still have it here. Let me know if you want it and I'll go hunting.

Agree with Remy though, bluetooth is much simpler these days. Grab a window mount suction kit for the Treo, or a $10 generic mount from eBay, and mount it to the right of the instrument hump, then run your charge cable in the gap between the sterring column and the bottom of the instrument cluster and you're done.

Position of the mount is a personal thing I guess, but I like the RH of the hump as it is easy reach and you don't have to take your eyes off the road much. Also makes it easier to see when the phone is in GPS mode.

The reason I wanted to run with the in car kit is that it has an external antenna and would therefore give me better range. That's the theory at least.

I am familiar with the bluetooth setup. I use a Supertooth in the Kombi, which is transportable to the the Rangie, so I do use that. But as I said the in car kit gives better range?
