View Full Version : Oil Sump Leaking

My sump on the 300Tdi has been leaking quite badly so after discussing it with a machanic I was advised to use Blue Max sealent and put this on both sides of the new sump gasket, let it get very tacky and then bolt to 25nm.

This I did, and once tightened saw all the excess silicone being pushed out between the mating surfaces. No problem there, I just cleaned it up but my concern is how much would have been pushed through on the inside. If the same amount as on the outside then there should be quite a bit in the inside of the sump. What are the dangers of this, I would have thought the excess could block some of the oil paths, is this correct?

What is the best approach here?

Sorry to say I have seen excess sealant block oil strainers on the pump pickups and it resulted in crank damage.

I am always VERY wary of how much sealant I put on engine mating surfaces for this reason, a little goes a LONG way when it is compressed, I tend to put a small bead on the surface(s) and then spread it with my finger to make sure I don't have too much on. If you are at all worried I would take it back apart and re-do it using how much excess you had as a guide.
