Wheel Bearings - Prices

Hi

I need a set of wheel bearings for the Series 2a. Repco have kits (SKF bearings - 2 bearings and a seal I presume) for $177.35 for each side.:eek::eek::eek: I would need 2 sides. Now I have seals so I really only needs the bearings.

Any other places to ring who may be able to sell them a little cheaper. I would rather good bearings (SKF, Timkin, etc)

I don't know what is so special about those bearings but the bearings for my Disco1 cost $40/wheel for Timken bearings. So $20 per bearing. This is from my local bearing shop whose name I forget.
Extra for the seals but I get them elsewhere.

Surely Series bearings wouldn't be much different.

Go to your local bearing shop, such as SKF - last time I got bearings from them they had both a cross reference for Landrover part numbers and application data that covered Series Landrovers. And from memory they were around $20 each, but that was a few years ago.

I had quotes worse than that when I got my last set, went to the bearing place and it was waaay cheaper!

Try your local non dealership LandRover/4wd repair shop, or dare I say fleabay.

Ah yes Ebay. I bought some "Timkin" bearings on ebay and received the wellknown TWT bearings. :mad::mad::mad:

Try Four Wheel Drives in Vic on (03) 98 900509 - $27 per bearing for my 110 and seem to be reasonable on all LR parts. Haven't ordered yet, so don't know what make.

Try trader: clr4x4 on EBay. I have found that Gary knows series LRs, reasonable price, quick post etc....

I contacted Bearing Service Centre and they quoted me a price of $243 inc for 2 kits. :eek::eek::eek:

Maybe these are just expensive bearings...

I just had a look at the Fwds catalogue outers are $27.50 and inners are the same, oil seals are $3.85.

Garrycol, last year I got wheel bearings for my Series 1 from Four Wheel Drives, price from memory was about $27.50 each.

They are a 'no name' brand and they broke them out of a pack, the bearings were handed to me unwrapped ! I've never seen bearings sold this way, the only identification was a number on the inner & outer race (I may have a photo somewhere). I'm always worried when a manufacturer has so much confidence in their product that they do not put their name on it !
I only fitted them to one side at the front, they got me to Cooma & back but I bet the 1950's SKEFCO's on the other side last longer. Read 4WD's warranty policy carefully before buying.

Many years ago I got wheel bearing for my Defender from them and they were branded MNR, just searched and found that they are Indian.

Dickyjoe, you need to find someone with an account with a bearing company, larger companies can get huge discounts.

Next door to where I work in Dandenong is a Chinese bearing company warehouse. I've had a few bearings from them and I've had no issues but their range is very limited. They only make high volume sizes and couldn't help with the taper rollers for my S1 (but they could source Japanese bearings for me from one of the many bearing companies they supply).
Our tumble dryer died recently and I found it was the miniature bearing that the drum runs on had siezed. I got one next door for 48cents, it's lasted a month so far so I'll see how it goes....
I still have an MNR bearing so I'll see if they can help if your interested. Is the bearing the same size as the County/Defender (label on the MNR is 'R STC 4382') ? I know that the Series 1 was a different size to the Defender (the inner and outer bearings were different sizes) but I'm not sure about Series 2

You seem horrified that your MNR bearings were Indian - better get used to it when you buy genuine landie parts in the future.

A bearing place like SKF is definatly the place to go. Take the old ones in and they will just match them. In general I tend to avoid the words "Land Rover" when buying stuff like that, they seem to get $$$ in their eyes when you mention it.

I've used rover parts plus a few times and always had a good experience. good to deal with on the phone as well. I think much of their stock of parts are britparts.

Not exactly 'horrified' because I now know that a lot of their parts are from India (maybe that's why they bought Land Rover because they already make most of the parts there for the aftermarket ?!). It's just that I remember at the time I was told they sourced parts from the OEM suppliers to Land Rover. I've spoken to an ex employee since and found that this was a standard line FWD's used at the time.
A quick bit of research shows that SKF & Timken have manufacturing plants in China so maybe Chinese bearings might not be so bad........?

The change in wheel bearings was late Series 3 - i.e. all Series 1 (except semifloating axle), all Series 2 and most Series 3 are the same, late Series 3 and 90/110/Defender/RRClassic/Disco1 are the same (not absolutely sure of the last group, there may have been a second change in the 90s.). Disco 2 and all subsequent Landrovers/Rangerovers are different, but I don't know whether nthey are all the same as each other.

I got a excessively high quote from Repco too. Ended up buying what I required form the UK and getting them posted here. Total price cheaper than I could buy local!!!!
