View Full Version : EGT Gauges....Which one ?

I would like to fit an EGT gauge, but I haven't had anything to do with them yet. There are a few different one's around. If you have one already, what type do you have, digital, dial ? How much did you pay ? Some seem pretty expensive.
Are there different types of probes.....good one's, bad one's ??
Can you simply drill and tap a thread into a cast exhaust manifold to install the probe ?
Here's a couple of examples I've found........
ThermoGuard Instruments (http://www.thermoguard.com.au/prices.html)
Performance Gauges (HiFlo Fuel Injection) (http://www.hiflo.com.au/performance_gauges.cfm)

VDO ...;) Last for ever.... If going pre turbo as you know it all has to come off to drill and tap:(. Post turbo (Dump pipe) just leave it all on and drill and weild the threaded fitting on and jobs done. Most will say post turbo is not so good as a big temperature drop and gas density. I allow 200 deg drop. 600 = 800

I bought one of these. Ordered online, was at my door within a week.

Works beautifully so far, and seems very good quality.

This is what i fitted to my Defender works a treat and cheap as well , The only thing about it i did,nt like was the size of the thermo coupling , way to short to mount in the Tdi manifold , Its about 5mm long so i got a 100mm that is just right

TurboGlide suggested I contact WadeAir out near Parkes
Wadeair - Australia's premier GPS and Aviation Accessories Supplier (http://www.wadeair.com.au)
He said to ask for one of a Chinese EGT meters and probe M8 X1
The prices and packages on the net are different to asking over the phone.
I rang on the 1st September ...... the package arrived on the 2nd September costing us $98.95 including postage.
Our EGT is normally used in a Ultralite motor.
As we are still getting our vehicle back on the road so I can't tell you how it works yet.
Sorry about that.

Thermoguard.
Ian's a member here and a nice bloke.
A lot of us use his EGT readout in Tdi's.

I have the EMS2 sold by the Entertainer here on this forum. EGT, Water Temp, Gearbox temp, Turbo Boost, Volts, hour meter, artificial horizon, R380 mainshaft wear (joking on that one) plus most things it measures can be alarmed (eg EGT above 700deg).

Visit a truck wrecker and look for an Isspro. They are a top shelf line. Were standard equipment in a number of North American brands. Some are just a pyrometer and others include a boost gauge. As a point of interest the thermocouple is always fitted post-turbo in heavy trucks.

I have VDO same as all my gauges.

Have no EGR so welded a nut on the plug and Taped in there.
Believe a MUST have for Turbo.

Shame they won't have a half metric one. Boost in psi but temp in C, that'd be the ducks nuts.
Any good brand will do, pick one that matches the rest of your truck.
I've got black VDO gauges with green backlights to match my rangie instruments.:)

 Reminds me of a stereo that came with a car I bought a few years back. Surprisingly people were *really* keen to buy it off me.

I was thinking of the Isspro industrial range. Large diameter gauges, white numerals on black face, big print, green illumination. generally found on North American custom built trucks, White, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Marmon, Autocar, Freightliner, Western Star, Oshkosh, etc. Heavy duty gauges for rough applications.

I have sold and fitted many Thermoguard pyro kits, even fitted them to the odd 78/9 series we have turboed:o (Sorry Ian:D)
They fit neatly in the coin tray of the disco, and in the cruiser, they take the place if the digital clock, perfect fit!

Are these an expensive item ? Some of the other functions would be good to have. Do you know if it has the ability to read the temperature of the head by using a thermocouple (I think that's what it's called) fixed to the head by a bolt, so it reads the temp of the metal, not just the water temp.

When I got mine in my 200Tdi, they only had the red one for $48.50. I'll be getting the green one this time around as I found the red too brash.

While we are talking about gauges, how about adding Boost gauges to the thread.
If people don't mind what EGT gauges and Boost gauges are in use?

No, they are not expensive. Considering the cost to buy all the individual guages and sensors to run what the Madman does it will cost heaps more. The Madman is a kit that supplies all the right sensors and mounting plates for your vehicle. You just need to let them know what you would like it to read and they will supply the right parts.
The temperatures use a normal VDO sensor which means there is a fare amount of work to get these mounted up. The best thing about the Madman is that you can set alarms for any over temperature. This can be set by the user so you can run it extremely tight if you like. Combining a tight water temperature alarm and having the low water sensor alarm would cover you in most situations. You would have to have complete failure of everything to miss this
IMHO it is a brilliant kit.

I ended up ordering the same items from the States. Where did you tap in the probe. I was thinking right in the middle at the top of the manifold to get an even reading from all cylinders combined.

Either the Thermoguard or VDO analogue - I am using a VDO gauge with the probe down stream fo the Turbo - essential for lonjevity especially when working the engine hard. I have just arrived home from a 6000k trip in just over a week - far west QLD in 45-50 degree heat - Strezlecki post rain and floods - Eyre Peninsula cold and wet - Adelaide and home via Broken Hill Wilcania - Bourke on the Darling run south of the river - lots of very soft - ending with 1500ks today. The EGT gauge proved to be most important in managing the engine load and in monitoring how hard the engine was working and in managing fuel consumption - higher EGTs = higher fuel consumption

I was thinking of getting an adaptor made up to go between the manifold and the turbo... drilling and tapping the centre would be easier, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of room on mine. Nehow, this is what I had in mind:

I drilled and tapped mine into the manifold. It's quite thick in the middle, so it shouldn't affect anything.
I didn't remove the manifold to drill it........I drilled a small pilot hole first while holding a small, but powerful magnet next to the drill bit to collect the metal shavings. When I slowly drilled the bigger hole and tapped it, I used the magnet, but I also had the engine running so the exhaust pressure would prevent anything dropping in if the magnet missed it. I found out about this method on a engine conversion site I was looking at. It seems to be a common practice and works well.

Thanks Murray,
Looks good. Glad to hear there's a fair bit of meat in the middle of the manifold, so I'll be doing the same.
My manifold's still off the car so thankfully I won't need a magnet this time, but its a very neat trick, I'll have to remember that.

Hi Murray - been offline/busy...
As I posted in my turbo install thread, I tapped mine in the post near #1.
