Well, after smugly having the uni's replaced with greasable ones, the bearing in the double Cardan joint between the two unis has croaked, or whirred and then chirped and then pretty much fallen apart. We were doing 110k and heard it just as we were arriving at our destination. From pulling off motorway to carpark it was already getting worse.
Here's the fun bit. You can't fix it and you can't get a new drive shaft that can have the uni's changed, the newer version are a sealed unit. :o
So $700 later, + $260 to tow it to MR Autos, I have a new shaft. Nice one.

Interesting warning to all those who think that they've got rid of the 'Double Jeopardy Joint' problems by installing greasables.
I feel your pain....... really;)

Absolutely.
In fact, I think that if you do not actively service a greasable DC after 4WDing etc, that they won't last as long as an OE non-greasable shaft.
Peoples need to upsize the DC joint to something stronger.

You can replace the centering bearing just as eays as the UJ's, Infact "when" you replace the UJ's for greasable ones, you should renew the bearing at the same time.

Why is it that the D2 has the double cardan joint?
Is it just a NVH thing?
Can a D1 normal shaft be used?
They can be had 2nd hand for under $50 and they don't cause any problems on a Disco1.

They also have developed the part needed so it can be done with a larger joint.

Question?
Do the 110-130 have the same problem?
or do they have a longer front shaft then the Disco?

They have a regular nonDC shaft. Rover LT230 front shafts are common except in the Disco2 (and Puma???)

I replaced the DC joint and uni's when it chirped with a Hardy Spicer number, it cost $77.00 in Adelaide.

This is the last post of mine re: front tailshaft vibration.
I took my tailshaft off and in to get balanced seems like it was the "Ball Kit" had no roller pins inside??? I checked with the mechanic who changed my 2 uni's who said none there when he pulled apart and did'nt know there should have been.
All I can think is uni joint was replaced before ii got the car 3 months ago and they have never beeen in there.
Anyway "Gibbs Truck and Trailer Parts" at Burliegh on the Gold Coast did a great job and can balance tailshafts in house.
Dropped it of at 7.30 am they called at 8.30 am to confirm price $195 ball joint 2 uni's and balance.
Ordered parts from Brisbane fitted them and I picked it up at 2pm.
thanks to all for your help
Steve

So no one knows why the Disco2 has the double cardan joint but no other similar model does?

The D2 had a massive amount of work done to it to reduce the NVH levels and this was just part of the solution.

The Series3 Stage 1 also did, though it was a bigger DC than what the D2 has - no doubt the same as the Mil one.

Have you tried to see if it will fit the D2 Simon, or at least be modded to fit.

G'day Baz,
No, never made the comparison. They definately are not standard rover flange pattern, though neither is the D2/DC flange. I'm pretty sure (but not 100%) that it doesn't though.

Hi Nobby,
The part number is SCV-82A which is the full joint including seals, from Hardie Spicer on Churchill Rd Nth . Apparently after speaking with my mechanic they are not available in SA and the current thinking is towards just replacing the whole shaft as the time + parts scenario is almost the same cost.

You will find that the oil seal which is included with SCV-82A kit is different to what is actually used in the D2 and will NOT fit.
Other than that, the ball joint is identical and will fit. So, if you can recover the oil seal without damage from your old shaft and it is in a condition to reuse then you can use the SCV-82A kit.
I believe the SCV-82B kit has the correct size oil seal.
I have first hand experience with SCV-82A but no first hand experience with SCV-82B so maybe someone else can confirm that SCV-82B has the correct oil seal.

Its because the D2 has a larger angle / height diff between the front output of the transfer box and the front diff, a normal "single" UJ would have not provided enough movement.
