G'day all.

The Flandie will be undergoing surgery tomorrow - new radiator as the old one is cracked and apparently cannot be repaired (alloy). Gonna get the plastic A-bar fitted as well (Handbrake didn't want pipework of any sort).

Anyway, scored some 16inch alloys off FleaBay and will be replacing the steelies with the alloys.

Question is what tyres?

Currently I have Coopers ATs - done almost 50,000kmin the last 6 years, but one is pretty worn, one got a side wall rip so the spare is different. Had no problems with them. I am not sure if I can get Cooper AT (not ATR) so might need to replace the lot anyway.

Considering Coopers again, but would like to know what other good options are there for commute and dirt-road. I want something good on highway, but tough/lasting and puncture resistant on dirt.

Suggestions?

I have BFG AT's 225/70/16 - wearing really well - chunky enough for most offroad work and grippy enough for around town - just a bit noisy at slow speed - OK above 80kph.

Firstly... What age is your Freebee?

If it's a TD4 (2000 MY onwards), make sure you haven't got a set of early 16" rims. Basically, they won't fit over the brakes!!!

Assuming that's all OK, I'd go with Garry's suggestion of BFG AT. Either that or the Goodyear Wrangler MTR, which is what I run.

My 215/75R15's are a little over half worn in 70,000kms. Never a puncture or flat.

Thanks guys.

It's a 1998 L-series Diesel. The rims are the correct size/part number for the model. No worries there.

The boys at Graeme Cooper are chasing an older version of the Cooper AT (not the new ATR) to get me out of trouble as I think I should replace one tyre before Chrissy trip, and the new wheel/tyre combo will wait till next year.

The BFG AT sounds like a good option - at least the patter doesn't seem to change too often as the more 'fashionable' tyres which creates an issue when only one tyre needs to be replaced some years down the track and that pattern/model is no longer available (good way of making people buy w whole new set).

Don't mind a bit of noise at low speeds, for the long, drawn-out high speed work I prefer to have less noise. Around town I normally drive with windows down and radio up so get enough noise as it is.

Goodyear Wrangler MTR look nice but I am not looking for a muddie.

Don't want to go oversize with the tyres - at the moment enjoying 9L/100 around town and better on highway run.

I have a set of 225 or 215 70 r 16. I am out of town so I am not 100% sure of the first number is at the moment. They are ATs, they are quiet on the road. As for off road they havent been there yet. I only have 5000 km on them so far. Cost $810 for a set of 4.

It may well be a muddie but its road manners are superb. For grip, even in the wet, I have found them to be as good as the Michelins.

I use them as my regular tyre and I don't have any problems at all (I'm also a fussy bugger when it comes to tyres).

Running a set of 215/75 x 15 Cooper ATR and have over 115,000 km and still have plenty of tread remaining. Nearly all highway work with an occasional bush track thrown in.Only one puncture in all that time and the spare is new.

Cooper and American tyre pricing is badly affected by the Aust dollar vs US dollar.
