HELP wanted for TD5 "Stalling" Issue

Lucky I have a patient wife !!

Have had an ongoing (but unpredictable and not consistent) issue with our 2005 TD5 which includes occasional "stalling" or non-starting. I have noted that sometimes when the ignition is switched on the temp gauge rockets to max even though this could be first thing in the morning ! The only way to reset is wait or disconnect black plug from ECU !! Starts straight away after that....?

Have lived with this so far BUT it happened to my wife in the middle of West Perth yesterday ! She kept her cool even though none of the guys sipping cappacinos at the sidewalk cafes offered any asistance, waited 5 minutes and managed to get it started....frustrating to say the least.

She loves the landy so gotta resolve this ASAP....any similar experiences ? Fixes ?

Few questions that may help. (just realiesed its in the defender forum so ignore the first one!!)

Is it a manual or automatic?

has it been chipped?

if so by who?

When does it stall. Is that just after starting. Fault MAF can cause this. (as well as difficult starting)

Interesting that the removal of the black plug sorts it out. Almost like its powering down / reseting something.

Pete...yes recent chip work by Tombie but to be honest we had the problem before that so pretty sure its not related....

not necessarily just after starting although i think that happened once a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes just as you are driving along and it feels as its going to stall but only for a fraction of a second then all OK

Also had some thoughts that it might be related to security as shutting the doors, locking and walking away for 5-10min sometimes helps ?

Im not convinced that this is the casue, but when you take the plugs off the ecu, is there any trace of oil? Remove the light coloured plastic inserts when the plugs are off.

Nothing obvious and I had rovertech replace the motor section of the harness some months ago.

I will pick up some contact cleaner (as they suggested) and use it to clean any residue in the sockets...maybe that will help ?

If Tombie did the work I would be confident that's not the issue then.

Do you have anyone local with a Nanocom or other diagnostics tool?

Rovertech I think have it ...booking it in for a service next week so I will check.

Again to be honest , I am not that clued up on the tech side - would like to be though, especially in this instance.

Check all the earths under the driver where all the ECU's are kept. Some of these are a known cause of lots of faults with the Defender.
Check backed out pins, connections not pushed home etc.
Part of servicing i would check & tighten all earth points especially on a Deefer.
When the service person checks, also get him/her to have a look at the fuel pressure. Possibly fuel pump.
But lets start with the basics.

It may be worth checking all the earth connections, particually the one in the seat box near the ecu itself. M6 nut in centre of seat box floor. Try running a second wire from the terminal directly to the battery negative and see if this helps.
