AIR LOCKER FOR 2A SWB?

I would like member's opinion as to whether I should fit a salisbury locker to the rear of my 2a. The vehicle is 100% original and I have been told it is a "simple matter" of shortening the tail shaft and putting metal wedges to alter the diff angle and the fitting of a vacumn switch. Does anyone know if this is the case and what is the general opinion of this mod?

It has been done by a number of people, apparently with success. Any lift is likely to cause more difficulties, but without a lift it seems to be successful.

The problem is that the longer nose on the salisbury makes the tailshaft very short, leading in turn to excessive angles on the universals (making them shortlived). Tilting the nose up does not lengthen the shaft, but reduces the difference in height of the pinion shaft and the transfer case output shaft, and this reduces the angle of the joints. But the angles on the two u-joints are no longer the same, and this will lead to higher levels of vibration unless the front joint is replaced by a CV joint such as a "double cardan" joint.

Another minor problem that needs to be mentioned is that the salisbury axle will need to have new spring saddles added, as the lwb has the springs set wider than the 88. Since these need to be added anyway, they can be put at the appropriate angle so you don't need wedges.

I cheated when I did mine...

since the sals was only on the LWBs and the spring hangers are wider ona sIII LWB than a SWB II I took a sIIILWB sals, hacked off the spriing mounts then made some new ones and had them welded in the correct positions at the correct angle.

no need for dodgy looking wedges.

using a shortened early range rover rear tail shaft will allow more angle.

i think they make a manual locking diff setup for rover diffs if you are interested. pretty sure macnamara has been making them for years now

A old mate of mine, who does my machineing, him and his brother bought one each new, back in about 1971:D
