Hi guys, Has anyone had a problem where the bottom part of the tailgate rubs on the bumper bar trim when opening the boot? I'm not sure if the bar is warped from the hit or maybe a past accident? But I'm not sure how to fix? Adjust the bar mounts or attempt to melt with a heat gun? Thanks for any help. I'm gradually fixing up this 99.

Hi Ren - mine was similar. Not sure if the tailgate was touching while opening but the rear lamp guards fouled on the bumper when it was opened. First part of the fix was to replace the retaining cables as the old ones had stretched. Next was to trim the lamp guards, and third was to replace the rear bar.
Cheers, Paul.

not sure but is it possible that the body mounts have allowed the body to drop a little, my 89 RRC did the same thing and to fix I just put a couple of washer under the 4 rear mounts
cheers

Think this has been a problem from almost day one. Both of my P38 Range Rovers have suffered to varying degrees.
If you look around most have marks at the bottom of the tail gate where they have rubbed on the bumper.
From my observations think that the bumper tends not to go fully back into shape after even a small bump which results in the scratching.
Would replace the retaining straps if you can see no sign of a raised point on the bumper corresponding with where the marks are on the tailgate.

I'll post a photo as it looks like I'll have to lower the bar. If you open the tailgate about 3/4's of the way, it starts to noticeably rub. Spacers may help, it looks like it has been happening before I bought it, but is now starting to scratch the tailgate badly.

The rear bars warp with age/heat. There are clips that hold the plastic section in place but they can't stop the warpage.
Mine was the same & I glued a length of 1" aluminium angle to the underside of the bar. I used silicon adhesive & left it clamped for a day or so. It's been on for over a year now & shows no sign of letting go :).
