Im looking at a 01 Td5 Defender , Anyone know what year they changed over to the rover type rear Diff and what year had the issues with the oil pump bolt
And any other issues relating to that year model would be good
Thanks in advance;)

theres nothing wrong with the rover diff....if it has a locker fitted;) deffinatly dont have to shave it!
i think it was 2003 that the rover diff made it back in but i may be wrong??

the oil pump bolt should be sorted but its something a dealer should be able to confirm for you. either way its only a hour to do the job.

cheers phil

I agree with Phil, I think the change was the 03 model year.

01 would still be in the risk area I think. Mine is 01, and I dropped the sump, and while the bolt was tight, it didn't have any trace of loctite on it.

the diff changed in late 02.
as a rule of thumb.... if you have a sals you have the potential for the pump bolt to be loose and should also have the older 2 wire TPS.

2 wire TPS ?
The car only has 100k,s so its in realy good nick;)
Not that the diff will worry me as i have a sals with a locker for it;)
Im a bit concerned at all the woes with the Td5,s after jumping from a ever reliable Tdi Defender but its something that i have to do or get another Tdi but they still want stupid money for Tdi,s:cool:

2 different version of throttle position sensor. Up to 2001/2 they had the 2 track version. After that they had the 3 track pedal. (for confusion the 2 track one doesnt have 2 wires!)

There were a number of improvements in the 2002 onward model year, including one piece rear door, different method of holding rear body onto x member, rear fog and reversing lights, horizontal radio panel in dash etc etc.

Well i took this fender for a drive today :eek2: All i can say is it must be chipped :censored: (bugger that swear filter) ;)
Yep very impressed compared to my slightly tweaked Tdi , The thing just fly,s
Pulls like a bull in 5th from 60-80 , 80-100 , a little sluggish of the line from a stand still tho
The rev,s hang on inbetween gear change,s  is this a Td5 thing ?
All the drive train seems tight and noise free a couple of issues , front wipers dont park:( , rear wiper does,nt work:( ,Hazzard lights dont work:( the roadie should have them fixed i hope:cool:
I also drove a 2000 Td5 manual disco what a slug compared to the fender ,Ok the disco had twice as many k,s
Im swaying towards this thing (fender) what do you guys think ?

Hi All,
Saw the comment about the Rover type rear diff. I've read that it is in fact a P38A type diff which is the same as the Military wolf type, and is a proper 4 pin diff. It's supposed to be just a s strong as the Salisbury diff, but more compact.
Has anyone pulled one of these post 03 diffs out and had a look - Are they really 4 pin diffs?

Yep as far as i know they are infact a 6 pinion not a 4 pinion diff ;)

on the p38 diff.
if your a yank...
its a 6 pinion diff. it has 4 gears that drive the 2 side gears ie 6 pinion diff.
if your a pom
its a 4 pin diff, there are 4 gears pinned to the housing.
if your an aussie urm take your pick but you also get to call it a cross pin diff because the 2 pins make a cross in the center of the diff.
I call it a 2 pin diff there are 2 pins that run the diameter of the diff.
the original rover diff is
a 4 pinion diff to the yanks
a 2 pin diff to the poms
a single pin diff to me
peanut butter to anyone trying to push more than the basic 3.9v8s power output into it as a rear diff.

hahahahahahahahahahahahah :lol2:
No, at least as far as the CWP goes, there is no comparison.
8.5" spiral bevel centre vs 10.25" hypoid....
FWIW, 130man on here has the beefiest Rover style rear end on his '01 ex-Telstra 130 I've seen, it has more gusetting and bracing than the harbour bridge
I'm guessing the Telstra utes must have been cracking Sals diffs, (axle tubes ??) so Rover Australia fitted heavily braced Rover housings.

Well got the new beast today what a wow factor :D, A couple of questions tho:cool:

The revs hanging on between gear change,s , does this have something to do with the wires going to the clutch master cyclinder i remember reading about disconnecting the wire,s

And also what do people do with the traction control when fitting Diff locks i have front and rear lockers to fit yet , Just wondering if the locker,s will upset the electrics:cool:

Pics will be up tomorrow , I know the forum :rulez:

With the diff locks engaged the traction control will become null and void, but without them it, it will still be an aid, best of both worlds, if you like;)
