Hey all,

I am thinking about buying a 2003 td4, I was just wondering if there are any quick tricks I can do to test if the running gear is in good nick? Any help would be much appreciated......

He's from the UK, but I like Honest John's appraisals:

This is I think the best way to do a pre purchase inspection to a Freelander.

Keeping your back to it at all times walk around it 5 times and then wait for the sales man to come over and see you.

Ask him to take it for a drive but dont go with him and then ask him the important questions like:

Will it blow off a falcon
How loud does the stereo go.

Then make the choice, hand over the dow and get the car delivered or make the better choice and walk away without actually burning the imprint of it into your eyes.

Of course this is just meant as a joke but I would be very careful when buying any freelander, most have a fair few things that break on a regular basis and some are very expensive to fix.

PS, my wifes freind with the V6 2 door 2003 model is up for #3 Visous coupling :D.

Geez they just love that car and will hate it when the lease runs out.....NOT:(

Post 2000 models do not go through VCs so if it is on its third, that car has major - but very abnormal issues.

Yeah, that was my understanding.... post 2000 ford had sorted out most reliability issues.... particularly the TD4

Abnormal issues with the VC, Central locking and alarm (LR issue), Cruise control, Injectors, 2 Cat converters (due to over fueling from the injectors) and the list goes on.

Their well respected LR recomended repairer has said that this is a good freelander.

My wife had to drive it on a work trip and said she would have prefered to take the Disco....and since the lift she hates friving the Disco.

She said the steering is heavy like it doesnt have power steering and it has a grinding noise coming from under the front floor....In women speak I translated to a Noisy trans or front shaft.

I wont touch it as I know the guys that do know what they are doing.

But I will say, the others that I know of that are crap have been pre 2000 I think.
