View Full Version : Unwelcome guests inside your swag

I was wondering if you guys ever encounter unwelcome guests inside your swags?
We have the famous Camel spider and a certain amount of scorpians around at night in our desert which puts me off camping under the stars in just a sleeping bag.
Am I being over cautious?
Thx.
ps. Sleep tight!

if your swags a decent one with an internal fly thats not a problem.
I also generally swag up on top of a vehicle or trailer which helps keep the bities at bay.

I was camped up at Hummocky Beach (near Starke River) Cape York, a few years ago and got a large centipede inside my swag. I woke up and felt it crawling over my neck. I brushed it off but it bit me in the process. Had a sore neck for a few days afterwards. Turned out that it came from the bloke who was sleeping beside me. It crawled onto him first and he flicked it off and it landed on my swag.

Never had the problem, although in my younger days I have slept quite often on the ground with just a swag - and never anything as elaborate as the modern ones.
I think the odds are pretty much against anything getting in with you, although I would make sure you didn't do anything as silly as camping on or close to an ant's nest.

I'm the same. I just drag the swag out next to the fire and the only thing that seems to be annoying is mozzies.

Well since, unlikeours, your scorpions are actually deadly to people I;d get a swag with a mesh screen in it, as mentioned. I have one and they are great - especially for the most common problem here which is... mozzies.

"Touch Wood", we have never had creepy crawleys in our swag, and have been sleeping out for years.
Had a prob with a cockroach in bed in a motel in Sth. Qld last year:eek:
A good mozzie net around the swag is the go though. Mozzies singing in the ears when you're trying to get to sleep is not good.

My mum was bitten by a camel spider when l was a boy and we were living in Libya when dad was stationed there whilst serving in the RAF around 1962. Nasty bite required medical treatment she was bandaged for a while

I once camped near Laila lake in Saudi about 160Km south of Riyadh.
We knew it was a camel spider area so slept in the car and put the kids bags outside.
When we reloaded the car in the morning a camel spider jumped out of my son's bag. Well he squealed like a girl, frightening the spider so much it slid up the inside of the drivers seat on my 81 RRC. There was a quick evacuation and much spraying of insecticide but we never found the spider.
When we went camping I found it good to rake the area where we were pitching the tent as several scorpions usually lived in the gravel.
Every morning I would shake the shoes and move the fridge. Sometimes we would have 3-4 scorpions under the fridge looking for moisture.
Never got any in the tent, however my son recently was bitten by one in his garage in Kellyville, sydney. Irony eh!!

Don't go getting all PC on me. Anybody/thing, somebody/thing, was not a derogatory comment, just a simple fact.:D

I can recall as a cub (scout) over in Riyadh having a few desert campouts.
Some of the American kids used to put scorpions in a empty tin on a fire and try to get 'em to fight each other.
Wasn't a great success.
I suspect those Yank kids are now running Gitmo !

I was camping out on the fringes of Arnham Land back in 2002 while on my 4 week outback expedition, during which i mostly slept in my Sar Major Discovery swag with the fly zipped up.
One morning I woke up at about 5am and when i opened my eyes i was greeted by a dingo happily checking me out through the fly. He was actually standing on the swag with his head about two foot away from me. It absolutely scared the hell out me....though you should have seen the speed of the dingo when i screamed.
It was also the second (and last) time that i had a shot of rum for breakfast.

Camel spiders be buggered, Dropbears are the thing to look out for, when in OZ don't camp under a tree or you might not wake up, Regards Frank.

Not a swag, but I got into bed one warm night and shook my leg to settle the hairs. However when the 3rd attempt failed I threw the covers back to reveal a large funnel web spider crawing up my leg. It took me a while to get back to bed but my wife couldn't sleep in the bed for the next week.

Not just that Tank!, dont camp under tree OR at base of any reasonably angled slope of a hill with sparse or little vegetation.... The hoop snakes wont get you at night but in the morning theyll have you!
been sleeping in swag (basic swag no fancy windows or window dressings, no zips or stuff, just a good old swag) regularly for years in desert and other areas, never had too much of a problem, although after a big night on some "queensland diesel" (about the 10th wilmington night rodeo!)slept thru my swag getting towed around the campsite behind the car for a bet!! (slowly Im told!) and after another big night (curdimurka outback ball) woke up a little later than others and found that theyd placed a wooden cross on top of my swag and surrounded it with a nice empty bottle fence... its good to have mates!!!!

I still wonder as to why women love wombats so much, but despise us guys who try to live the lifestyle.

Staying at Wifey's parents place, bloody kitten crawled in to bed, unbeknown to me, till it 'pounced' on some thing that it had no right pouncing on.
Gave me a hell of a fright!

My lovely wife, who by the way loves me as well, and I have single swags unlike the Numpty's double bunger, and the only thing to crawl out of those besides ourselves has been a hangover or 10.
I had a wombat run though my old tent at Geehi one cold May morning but he didn't stop to eat root or shoot - he just left.
Anyway I'm off to do some reciprocating:angel:

A funny prank we once pulled on a mate was to put empty beer bottles (obviously not broken ones) in his swag when he's had a big night. Funny to see him wake up in the morning, mega hungover with empties all around him...:D

After spending many years in recon (where luxury was a sleeping bag and a wimp mat) sometimes wrapped in a groundsheet, mostly just crashed sitting against my pack. Never bitten/ stung/ envenomated by anything worse than an ant.
Bought a swag from Lotus Glen Prison (Great value) for vehicle mounted patrols, was well impressed as the rain poured down and I snuggled in. Water starts to rise, so I raise the ends a little more, snuggle back in felling smug.
Then all the little forest creatures realised there was a dry spot to be had:o.
A bit like 'Arachnaphobia' as the swarm over-runs the victim. I left them to enjoy the swag and tacticaly withdrew to the vehicle.
Dave.
