After my first visit to the summit of Mt Barney, I finally got the chance to return earlier this year. A K1W1 import came to work for me and we got talking about our fondness for climbing mountains. So a return visit was organised for us to retrace the steps I took with my 7yo.

I lent Doug some gear, and told him to meet me at my place early in the morning. It is lucky that I was leading this expedition, as Doug took the same wrong turn 3 times delaying us for an hour.

He turned up eventually and we set off in search of our mountain.

We set off from Yellow Pinch retracing my steps from my previous journey, and set a much better pace this time as we were 2 grown men and only carrying day packs. We turned on to the South East Ridge track and ascended upwards.

Again we climb up towards the razorback and the cliffs. Doug then informs me he has a problem with heights:eek: It did make for some comical moments as I got him to pose for photo's on the side of some of the cliffs. He was not amused:D

We reached the summit and then had a similar problem descending to the saddle.

We reached the Old Hut Site, and as it was too hot we then went to Rum Jungle for lunch.

The descent was alot kinder on my knees this time, as I didn't have the load, but as I was less fit this time I still felt them.

Some wildlife.

It was great to revisit the summit once again and relive my previous adventure. If anybody is up for it, I will most certainly do it again, although I want to try some of the other routes.

Don't let the look of Doug fool you. That is how all kiwi's look when they are freshly shorn:p

But seriously, he is in his 50's and is quite fit, he just aged a bit that day.

I would be happy to show you around if you are ever up this way Bazz.
